AFAIK you just have to log any gun that you've purchased with your C&R

You must log any firearm that the feds consider a C&R regardless of whether CA will let you purchase it with a C&R license or not. Any C&R you aquire after the date you are issued the license goes in. Anything that is in the book that you sell before the license expires gets logged out. C&R's you had before you got the license don't go in. If you sell them after you got your license they don't get logged out because they were never in in the first place.

      I think.

I understand that you have to log cmp purchaces. I gus my question would be beter phrased "do I have to log modern firearms?"

No, you don't have to log in modern firearm purchases. Only those firearms that are C&R.

I actually keep a separate log for modern guns just for my own records in case of theft, insurance needs, etc. I guess I'm a geek...

I keep my all-gun log computerized and off-site (that way if my trailer burns or computers are stolen, I can file a correct police report).

I keep my C&R logbook on paper on-site.
