I always shoot corrosive ammo out of my mosin. Today at the range, I poured water down the bore to dissolve any water soluble salts that might cause rust. The barrel was extremely hot, so when I poured water down the bore, the water immediately started steaming and shot out of both ends of the bore. I know that you can crack or warp metal if you cool it down rapidly while it is heated. Can my mosin be easily damaged in the same way? I looked down the bore with a light and didn't notice anything unusual.

My guess as an amateur admirer of things metallurgical is that you have nothing at all to worry about:
- the metal wasn't hot enough for this to be a concern
- not enough water came in contact with the metal to effect sufficient heat transfer
- the cylindrical/concentric nature of things allowed for an even stress distribution -
At least you didn't drop it. Another user dropped his AR and from what I gather, it was completely ruined.

I don't think that would cause a problem. When you think about it, a great number of Mosin Nagants were actually battle tested in the most extreme circumstances, especially the harsh Russian Winter. It stands to reason that the rifles were commonly used in sub-zero temps, heated to several hundred degrees, then cooled quickly back down. Up and down in temp constantly. These old rifles battled through mud, blood, rain, snow, ice, and rubble, so i wouldnt worry about it sizzleing a little bit of water at the range.

I agree that probably no serious harm done with this event, most discussion here
that I have taken to heart is the use of HOT water down the bore. I think that would make for less
excitement and be more effective as well. Requires a bit more
set up though. That is what I intend to set up for.Comment

I think runnig a dozen patches of Windex down the bore (at home!) followed by the usual non-corrosive regimen is perfectly adequate to ensure preservation for the next hundred years. We're not talking about dissolving quarter inch rock salt crystals here.

Also, to my understanding, hot water is used because it evaporates QUICKLY so the bore doesn't stay all wet. Anyone else care to confirm or deny this? Because I'm not 100% sure.sigpic

the hot water is to help dissolve the salts more easily and thoroughly, cold water doesn't dissolve salts as quickly.
