    Mauser 98 help

I am trying to take down a a friends sporterized model 98 and I am stuck. The forward trigger guard locking screw has been replaced. The replacement screw just spins and will not rise out, so I can not remove the guard mount screw. The rear guard lock screw was also replaced and not original but it came out easily. I can not get under the forward guard lock screw to assist it up and I am just about ready to pull out the dremel tool and grind off the head.
Any helpful suggestions before I start grinding away?
    Thanks.

There are two screws; the smaller one needs to be taken out before the bigger one. I do not suggest grinding it down; although the spring tension from the magazine is enough to hold it in place, I don't recommend it.

If you can't get it out for whatever reason, order a set of RC screws and go ahead and grind the ****er off. If it has waffenamts (which I doubt) I would not suggest you do that.

Why are you taking the trigger guard off anyways?

Both of the smaller lock screws are not original. The two larger mounting screws are original. The forward locking screw I am having the problem with just spins.
Why am I taking it apart? The rifle has been sitting in storage for years and has rust showing and is very dirty. It needs a thorough tear down and cleaning. I have to check for hidden rust.
I tore the bolt completely down and it went from looking like hell, to almost pristine. The rifle is covered with Waffen marks and has all matching numbered parts down to the firing pin.
      Dremel tool is coming out.
Do you know where I can pick up some original or after market locking screws?
      Thanks,

AIM has them. I ordered a pack with an ammo order. $2.50 for 5, why not.
Looks like the radius cut was done by hand originally and fit for the rifle so out of 5 you should be able to get two to work.

Just to clarify, the AIM screws are the lock screws

            not the guard screws

Thanks to e-gunparts.com for having pictures and diagrams!

Yep, I need the lock screws. I used the Dremel tool carefully and ground away metal till the head was thin and hollow. I gently twisted the guard screw back and forth to break up the head and finish off the removal of the lock screw. No problems and did not damage the finish. The inside of the trigger housing had rust as did the barrel under the stock. Mostly surface rust that I removed with steel wool and Break Free. Cleaned the filthy barrel and now it is bright and shiny. Putting the rifle back together tomorrow and giving it back to it's owner. I think I am going to get a bottle of Gentleman Jack for my troubles.
