    I'm a Mosin owner!

This is a continuation of a thread I mistakenly started in the centerfire forum.

I just bailed out the Mosins from their holding cells at Big5! They are PRETTY! I couldn't wait so they are already torn down and receiving a complete scrub from muzzle to buttplate. I will take some pics of they new kids as soon as I get them back together.

    Everything looks good so far!

Thanks for the Big5 lead and coupon, I'm slowly getting familiar with the local gun shops and sporting goods stores and hopefully will be able to get around Ca soon without having my hand held.

(play Jeopardy music and fast forward an hour and a half or so....)

Here are a few pics of my new firearm obsession....

I don't know if the pictures show this or not, but I really like the contrast between the 1933 and 1943 models. The hex receiver and careful machining on the pre war '33 and the round receiver and really rough machining marks as well as the un-machined chamber wall on the '43 bring the history of the rifles to life. Really makes me wish they could talk. It's one thing to read about the history of the rifle and another completely to hold them in my hands and see the evidence.

I just realized that the '33 is about an inch and a half longer than the '43. Can anyone tell me if this is significant in any way?

Are you sure it's that much of a difference? I've seen 1/2 inch length differences, but never that much.

It's probably just slight changes in production over the 10 year timeframe.

It turns out that most of the difference was in my head. Not too uncommon an occurrence with an old hippy like me. It is only about 3/8ths of an inch.

ZenDaddy you are a funny guy. You picked up some nice rifles there. I like the hex receiver. I check my local Big 5 but have never seen one. Thanks for the pictures.

Of my 5 91/30s not a darn one is within a 1/4 inch of another in length.

                  Now that I can believe. My 46 M44 is about a half-inch taller than my 43 M44.

Awesome! Now find the shooter. Addicting is what Mosins are about. Get yourself a Tula and a M44 and M39 and you are good.

YEahhhhhh I want a carbine!!!!!!! When I was at Big5 picking them up my wallet kept trying to get out of my pocket to make whoopy with the carbine in the rack.

I managed to collect some ammo while the boys were in jail.

I got a spam can of bulgarian steel core heavy, about 700 rounds of hungarian hollow core practice ammo (46g?) and 120 rounds of etalon white tip.

Im hitting the range with the hollow core this weekend.

easing into that pool with the light stuff huh? i'll tell ya, even some of the 147-150gr "light ball" is pretty hot stuff. you definitely need a carbine though, only thing that'll match that muzzle blast is naval gun fire. beauty of the russian guns is that even the crappy ones are decent quality and 50x more reliable than anybody else fielded at any given time. most of 'em are pretty dern accurate too. don't dwell on the weak ammo too long. bruises make it all the more fun. even with the 91/30s being considerably more sedate than the carbines, put 100rds through one and you'll definitely feel it the next day. enjoy those mosins and welcome welcome welcome!

Mosins and ammo are cheap, I love them for that reason. I put pictures of mine in the C&R pictures area. Congrats on rescuing them from Big5. Its going to be weird the day we walk into a Big 5 and they don't have any and they say "we wont be getting anymore" But that most likely will not happen anytime soon.
