    Single SKS Question

I am Buying a Chinese SKS.

I dont want to change stocks or anything due to CA laws, BUT, IF I retain the original stock and such, is it LEGAL or ILLEGAL to install a detachable 10 round magazine?

Ive heard yes AND no and am confused....

An SKS with a detachable magazine is an "assault weapon" in California...

As used in this chapter, "assault weapon" shall mean the following designated semiautomatic firearms:
    (a) All of the following specified rifles:
    .
    .
    .
    (11) SKS with detachable magazine.

As long as you retain the fixed magazine though, you can pretty much mod it however you like. Including the stock. Just stay above the legal minimum length.

I heard that if i swap stocks it falls under the "922r rules" that means 10 foreign parts or less.

However is a Chinese SKS type rifle actually an SKS? Just like a Yugo M59 is not an "SKS", it is an M59. Would it still be classified as an assault weapon in that instance?

that may be correct but that's cutting it kind of close don't you think? It would be kind of hard to explain to a leo the exact differences. Why would you want too install a detachable magazine if you don't mind me asking?

Wouldn't it be cutting it kind of close to go with an OLL? <Sarcasm

Just because it's cutting it close doesn't mean that it may not be legal. I'd rather have the LEOs be forced to doubt their kneejerk reactions than for everything to be banned out of fear. Look what's happened with the OLL movement in the last few years.

That being said, no I wouldn't ever do it because the I don't have the dough to cover the legal fees and I prefer my SKS with clips. It's quicker than those crappy aftermarket mags (I had them when I lived in Georgia).

replacing the original stock with a Monte Carlo type will not violate 922r, because it is still a "sporting purposes" type. The cool ones do violate it.

BTW 922r pertains to manufacturing and assembly, not possession.

The aftermarket fixed mags suck. I have tried two with no luck. They look cool and feed fine, but are useless with stripper clips. I put the original magazine back on.

Not the fixed ones, he's talking about detachable 10 rounders.

If I'm not mistaken, the Chicom SKS rifles do say "SKS" on the receiver. If this is the case, you may not use detachable magazines. The Yugoslavian Simonov-Pattern rifles do not say "SKS" anywhere on the rifle, therefore they are not condsidered SKSs for the purposes of the AW laws.

As others above have mentioned, the fixed magazine works better than any aftermarket mags anyway, and loading with a stripper clip from the top is faster than rocking the giant duckbill mags into place anyway. You would be surprised how fast it is with a little practice.

Exactly! Although my Chicom SKS does not say SKS on it...

in considering this myself when I got my SKS after speaking with multiple people that had more experience in such matters than I have on this earth and not hearing a single story of reliable detachable mags I decided to leave it alone and become proficient with the stripper clips. most uses for an SKS involve a truck gun/shtf gun, and for these uses reliability=no 1 concern, and the fixed mag is that in spades.

You can install any stock you like, AS Long as you retain the original 10 round fixed magazine

...but in the end, they're actually cooler in their stock configuration. The only after market part really worth it is Murry's firing pin.
