    M1 Garand Question

Could someone tell me what the second sling loop on the foward stock is for? It's the one that is not completely closed....like it was made for easy removal of the sling.

its used to stack 3 rifles in a tripod so they dont have to sit on the ground.

For stacking rifles into a tripod like configuration. It gave the men carrying them a break and kept the rifles out off the ground and away from the dirt/sand/mud/etc

For as long as there have been guns, soldiers have not been trusted with them, for fear of mutiny...it was common to collect the guns, stack them in a central location, and post a guard, the stacked guns ready at hand when needed....old photos throughout previous wars show them stacked, sleeping with guns only coming into vogue when the hard realities of war overcame generations of inertia and mistrust of soldiers....and then as soon as things calm down, right back to where things used to be...

Yes it was....and still is to a degree....ditto taking them away as soon as reentering a bivouac, garrison or whatever....that they turned it into a drill makes no difference....commanders did NOT want a bunch of guys running around with weapons and time on their hands to plot mutiny.

Commanders aren't worried about mutiny; they're worried that they will leave the weapons in the PX or sell them at Ranger Joe's. I was duty officer one night when the post theater called to say that a .45 was found on the floor when they were sweeping up before closing. A unit had come back from a FTX and one of the soldiers detoured to the theater when he couldn't turn in his pistol. It fell out of his pocket when he fell asleep during the movie and he forgot all about it. Needless to say, he, his platoon leader, platoon SGT, squad leader, and company commander were all in deep kimchi.
