Google "Mitchell's Mausers". You will find everything you need to know about that turd operation.

Just the kind of crap I was worried about It's too bad nothing compares to the CMP for non-US rifles. I really do not know who to trust when it comes to buying anything, especially when I know nothing about it. At least with my Garands and carbines from the CMP I knew I wouldn't get screwed.

Prodrive- If I lived in SO cal I'd probably take a look. I'm sure you'll find a buyer in your area.

That's the problem, and that's what Mitchell's is counting on.

If you buy anything - a car, a house, a flat screen TV, a rifle - without doing some research first you are setting yourself up for getting burned. It's better to spend $100 on some books and educate yourself before spending several times that amount on a rifle, especially with K98k's when there are many humped (fake matching numbers, fake SS markings) rifles out there. Even searching this forum can raise you above the "know nothing about it" level. Here is a brief summary of the types of K98k's for sale

The two best books are "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" http://www.amazon.com/Backbone-Wehrm...sr=8-1-catcorr and "Kriegsmodell" http://kriegsmodell.com/

For a long time "Backbone" was the only good K98k available, it was something of a K98k bible. It is now somewhat dated and incomplete, but it is probably the still the best introductory book if you are at the know nothing about it stage. "Kriegsmodell" just came out and it has set a new standard. When the companion volumes covering prewar/early war, and midwar production come out (some years in the future) the set will be the definitive K98k reference.

Also worth getting is the Bob in Ohio CDROM http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...e-CD-Volume-II It is full of pictures of legit authentic original rifles. Just by looking through those pictures and then comparing a Mitchell's Mauser to them you could have seen something wasn't right.

After doing some research, the next thing to do is to decide the most you want to spend, and that will determine what you should be looking for. If you just want a shooter, get a Russian Capture (RC) like this http://www.jgsales.com/product_info....oducts_id/1623

That is the flat-out worst website to refer someone when it comes to getting a K98. Why are you even suggesting it?

I brought a K 98 from Mitchell. It is a decent shooter if you want a clean rifle to shoot, nothing more. All parts are refinished so as far as collectibility, it does not hold any value. Besides all the so-call accessories that comes with the rifle are junks! Good luck!

I really want to buy a Mauser for my upcoming birthday, and am not exactly sure who to give my business. I've sent a PM to PRODRIVE, but as far as online dealers go: is there a consensus that Classic Arms is a reliable place to get authentic Mausers? I'd really prefer a 98k, but if the prices are too high for a real one in shootable condition, I have no problem getting a 24/47 or Yugo M48 for the right price if it's in good condition for shooting (assuming I'm really buying one of those rifles, not a refurbed one with parts from different rifles/models like Mitchells Mausers). Where else other than Classic Arms has a reliable supply of Mausers?

I thought it had a totally different action (shorter). What are the practical differences between the two rifle models, for purposes of identifying one or the other? Is $299 a decent price for RCs and are they the cheapest option for authentic K98s? I'm mostly looking for a great shooter (bore/crown is more important than outside appearance), and don't particularly care if the numbers match, but I definitely want something that hasn't been tampered with by a third party like Mitchell... is a RC definitely what I should be looking for?

Not that I know of. Mine has a very good bore. It averages 3-4" groups at 100 yards. Of course, my eyes kinda suck, so I think it could do better.

To be honest though, if you just want a mauser and it doesn't have to be a K98, I'd get a yugo 24/47. They can be found in great shape for $150-200ish.

I would definitely stay clear from Mitchell's Mausers. If you check on Calguns periodically and post in the WTB section you will eventually find what you are looking for. Just be patient. In the meantime learn as much as you can about em!!!! Good luck!!!

I really prefer the look of the K98... I just don't like how the 24/47's upper wooden handguard goes around the rear sight and continues behind it... I know it's a small peeve but I just find the K98 to be a much prettier rifle, and even though this is going to be a shooter I want to get the rifle I like and also one that has some WWII history... were any 24/47s active in WWII and still good shooters?
