    reference for C&R restrictions?

    Hi, all -

I recently got my C&R. It's my understanding that our dear state lawmakers have complicated gun purchasing via C&R. I've looked at the state DOJ web site, but couldn't find anything meaningful.

Can anyone please direct me to a site that outlines the red tape we here in CA need to go through to comply with the laws for C&R acquisition? Thanks...

Here's a short version of what C&R firearms California C&R FFL's can acquire and where they can acquire them...

Buying C&R firearms from out of state

Out of state sellers can ship long guns that are at least 50 years old right to your door. (No additional California paperwork is required.)

You can go out of state and buy C&R long guns of any age and bring them back with you to California. (No additional California paperwork is required.)

You can go out of state and buy C&R handguns of any age and bring them back with you to California. (You need to report the handguns to CalDOJ and pay a $19 fee per handgun within five days of bringing them into the state.)

Any C&R firearms you bring into California must comply with California law. No assault weapons or magazines that hold over 10 rounds, etc.

    Buying C&R firearms inside California

You can buy long guns that are at least 50 years old from anyone who is not a Licensed California Dealer. (No additional California paperwork required.)

You can buy C&R long guns and C&R handguns of any age through a Licensed California Dealer. You have to go through the DROS and 10 day wait just like unlicensed Californians do though. (No additional California paperwork required unless you want to avoid the 10 day waiting period. If you also have a Certificate of Eligability from CalDOJ then you can avoid the 10 day waiting period on C&R long guns and C&R handguns that you buy through a California Dealer. You can also avoid the "one handgun per 30 days" rule on C&R and modern handguns purchased from a California Dealer.)

Thanks for the response, AII. So, in noting the absence of any verbiage regarding out-of-state handguns, do I surmise correctly that I can't have sellers ship them to me, or even to a dealer FFL?

And what is this certificate of eligibility of which you speak?

      Thanks again...

Seller's can not ship to you, they can ship to a dealer where you typically pay transfer fees, DROS fees, and wait 10 days.

It's issued by the state, typically to gunstore employees and FFL holders (including C&R). Requires a "livescan" (electronic fingerprint system from what I understand) and a background check, usually takes a few months and costs somewhere around $75 or so. Not too sure on the details, I've never bothered to get it.

The COE doesn't take very long at all to get, usually 10 days to 2 weeks.
