If your looking for a Mauser Carbine I would defiantly go with a G33/40, but thats just me, Its virtually a K98k but even smaller and more compact

I could be wrong but werent some GEW98 receivers either used for k98 length rifles OR had their barrels cut to be k98 length? If so, could this be a k98 length Gew98 with a full length Gew98 stock added later for the "mannlicher" look?

I guess there's a ring or cap that is supposed to go on the front of the rifle. Any ideas on where to find one? I have scoured the internet trying to find a photo or the actual piece itself but I have no idea on what it looks like.

From what it looks like to me, the front barrel band is missing. Infortunatly, it looks like the front sight prohibits the ring from being mounted so I dont think you will be able to use one.

You're thinking of the Kar98AZ, and I doubt it. First- They were not cut-downs; Kar98AZ's were purpose built. Also, I don't believe DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken) made Kar98AZ's. I could be wrong on that though...
