M1 Carbine bolt question

Got a NPM M1 Carbine. I have not shot it yet. Does the bolt hold open after the last shot?
Reason Im asking is when I place an empty magazine and charge the bolt. It will not lock open. Is this normal?

It is the magazine that has the "bolt open feature". Most USGI and some aftermarket mags do not have it and it would be normal for the bolt to close. You can lock the bolt open by pushing down on the pin on the charging handle.

The 15 round magazine followers were sloped at the rear so the bolt would slide closed after the last round was fired. The 30 rd magazines had a squared rear which held the bolt open after the last shot. However, there was no real device to lock the bolt open on the last shot. As soon as the mag would be released, the bolt would slide forward. You can always install a 30 rd follower in your mag to hold the bolt open.
