Ugliest Mauser stock ever!

So, I felt like spending part of my day off checking out some gun stores and pawn shops in the area to see if they had any decent surplus rifles. At the last place I went to they had a czech Mauser that was marked "98. TH." on the back of the tag with a symbol which I'm assuming was under the "stock".

The stock that was on it was black plastic which covered the entire top of the receiver except for the right side (to allow loading and unloading), back of the bolt and the bolt detach lever. The stock covered the barrel except for a few inches from the muzzle. It was SUPER heavy compared to the rifle with normal wood stock and it wasn't very well balanced.

I took a quick shot with my phone, though the camera sucks. Anyone know what this is?

If you take off the handguard, and just use the stock as a normal stock, it doesn't turn out too bad. It looks better with a heavy barrel. Of course, you have to remove the spots on the side of the stock for the handgaurd screws, and take off the rock hard recoil pad. It looks a bit like a Steyr Tactical stock. It has a nice flat bottom on the fore end for stability when shooting off bags and stuff.

Yep, the original is ugly as sin. MUCH better without the handguards.

Yes, the stock is ugly. But the handguard has a rail on it, so you can use it with a scope w/o any permanent alterations to the rifle.

The symbol you provided ('ATF' in a circle) indicates that the Mauser in question is actually a Turk. The 'ATF's on the top of the receiver ring & the 98. th. is on the side of the receiver rail. So yes- it is a Turk, HOWEVER, it's no ordinary run-of-the-mill garden variety Turk...

In the 1950's Turkey overhauled its LAST remaining inventory of German Gew 98 rifles. These were the result.

SO- That means the rifle in the pic is an AUTHENTIC 1898-1918 Imperial German Gew 98 that simply had new markings applied & went through refurbishment.

Too bad someone put it in the lame stock; they're fairly rare rifles...

I'm just about ready to stop going into pawn shops, or shops that take in a lot of used surplus rifles, and seeing nice rifles utterly destroyed and then not taken care of to become little more than a piece of wood with metal attached to it.
