Hit it with some solvent and a bronze wire brush, if it comes off then it was caked on grease or cosmoline, if not then its rust.

Thanks for the info, i went at it with some paint thinner and a microfiber towel and it did nothing really.

Would I be a fool to have it reparked if its rust?

When my steel reloading dies rust, I use a product called Nevr-Dull. It is a cotton wadding with mineral spirits in and and just does the trick. You might need to be careful with it though as C&R guns are more valuable with their "patina".

In the pics I saw what looked Like some light cosmo and a bit of rust. I use My girlfriends blow dryer for cosmo and steel wool, bronze brush and oil for rust. I'd start with some 0000 steel wool. It doesn't look like very much...probably just needs a bit of elbow grease. By the way congrats on the M1 carbine. Better stock up on ammo from cmp before its gone again!!!

cool looking. standard products i presume based on the serial.

it looks like original finish that has some oxidation in it. i would definitely not recommend reparkerizing it as it might lower the value.

using bronze or 0000 steel wool with denatured alcohol or bore cleaner or Kroil will help lessen it.

looking at it, it wont affect the gun and keeping it well oiled should arrest any further issues. the rust doesnt look cancerous so not too big of a preservation concern IMHO

              enjoy shooting

try and carefully clean it. careful with the steel wool, it will leave scratches. oil the heck out of it and shoot it! some small s[ots wont affect accuracy. enjoy, and welcome to the wonderful worl of the war baby!(unless you have others)
