What the most one should pay for a Hex?

What is the most sensible price one would pay for a good Tula or Izzy Hex?

Doesn't 120 bones seem like an acceptable ceiling?

Do you have a C&R? If so, then maybe the ceiling is less - if not, maybe it's even more...

I grabbed a 1933 Izzy Hex for $99 at Big Five... I say unless it's a Finn or some rare model, I'd never pay over 100 for ANY "relatively common" Mosin. They are so widely available for $100, and there are so many of them, you can easily find a Hex for that price with just a little effort (in my case... "please bring out a few rifles for me to compare").

Short answer: ABSOLUTELY NOT. Too, too many variables involved, I suggest you do some research on line or buy: "For Collectors Only: The Mosin-Nagant Rifle" by North Cape Publications to find out about all the variations and quanities manufactured.

I mean as how much should one pay as a guy just going to a gunshow?

As a sidebar, can I get some pro-tips of haggling?

100$ is about right for a run of the mill mosin (80 is the going rate but then again this is california)

like #3 said though - there are so many variations that you should really figure out what you want before you go out and buy. My first gun was a M38 and i overpaid a little but got a carbine like i wanted.

If you're going to a gunshow to buy a Mosin-Nagant, I think you really need to know what you're looking at, as there are some very overpriced M-N's (and a multitude of other guns) at gunshows. Sure, there might be a deal to be had, but knowledge of the type of gun you're wanting to buy is pretty much a necessity, or take a friend who knows about M-N's. Basic rule for buying at a gunshow: Take a borelight. Set a budget. First, always ask if the gun is "cash and carry". Don't ask " what's the price" Ask, "How much are you asking?" Don't make such a lowball offer as to offend the seller, as then he might not even haggle with you. I usually say "are you firm on this price?" His answer sets the tone for negotiations, always stay friendly and respectful while dealing with the seller. If he won't negotiate down to what you want to pay, tell him "thanks, I think I'll look around some more" There's a ton of Mosin-Nagants on the used gunmarket. Remember that most all prices are marked up higher than the seller will take. GOOD LUCK !! and tell us how it works out.

                  Izzy should be around $100

Tula, expect to pay slightly more. (make sure all the parts are Tula and not just the receiver)

I paid 89.00 +dros at Big 5, but mine's now "worth" 229.00 in the PPT Forum! (It's the Calguns effect, where used, shot out old guns are worth twice as much as new ones!)

Thank you. I pretty much know that I want a 91/30 Hex--factory not really important at this point. I know to look at the crown and the bore.

In your experience, will the guys usually take off the zip tie to the bolt and let you check out the rifle?

And if a guys asks $160, and you offer $120--is that enough to be considered lowball? I actually had a guy try to sell me one (a really nice 1930 Izzy Hex w/ all matching parts, but still) for a 160 bones. I just wasn't in the market at the time, but that was such a nice rifle...

Basically, what is the limit so as to not lowball the vendor?

Check out some of these: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRarity.htm
See what they are selling for on gunbroker.com

Year made, Armory, special markings, condition, etc. All of these factors and more can make a big difference between the average Mosin Nagant and something more special.

                            Awesome post above.

To the OP, if you are willing to put in the work and search all the Big 5's that you can you might be able to get two of them with that online coupon for $149 +tax & DROS. Or the very least maybe find one hex & one round then sell the round one here. Just a thought.

I did not see anything good at Cow Palace today; in fact, there were hardly any Mosins. =(
