My first Mil-Surp rifle went to the range....

My very first Mil-Surp Mosin-Nagant M44 went to the range today(Richmond Rod & Gun Club). Not knowing how much it kicks I was a bit nervous I fed it with Hungarian 147gr. 7.62x54R, shouldered it, aimed and pulled the trigger BAMM!!! saw a big-arse fireball in front of me I didn't have my vid-cam with me (next time). The metal buttplate is kicking me a bit, but the kick is much more equivalent to my Savage .308. Went through 200 rounds today.

Here's a pic of it: (iron sights) (patched hits are off the bench and exposed hits are bench)

I was shocked that I could hit the shoot-n-c target at 100 yrds. with iron sights. I have always been a scope guy.

Today was a good day. I had a lot of fun with the Mosin and I'm looking forward to getting more Mil-Surp rifles once I get my C&R license.

Nice pics! And good shootin' too!

I love my M44, fun to shoot, reliable, accurate, and ammo's cheap.

I've got a C&R - and I'm just about ready to get an FN-49, if I can find one at a good price.

My next purchase will be an M38, 91/30, K31, and an FN-49. I just sent my C&R form 2 days ago, so I still have a lot of waiting to do. I have to say that I caught the C&R bug..

          Nice!

IIRC, my cousin was holding 3" groups at 100 yards with my 91/30 off the bench with milsurp ammo. Mosins are much better rifles than you'd expect for around $100.

Welcome to world of Milsurps, they'll become an addiction quickly if you don't keep a handle on it, especially if you get a C & R LOL.

I stepped up after my first M44 and got a Yugo Zastava 59/66 SKS clone, and then followed up with some Mausers, other Mosins (M38 and 91/30 all Big 5 purchases on sale with 10% off LOL), and 8 more SKS clones and 7 Hakims (2 barreled receivers and 5 complete shooters).

            I'm still looking for more.

            Have a great Kenpo day

Yeah C&R fever is starting on me now. I'm looking at a Yugo 59/66 also and will wait until I get my C&R. For now I'm going to be hitting Big 5 and Old West Gun Room in El Cerrito for Mil-Surp rifles.

Damn man, 7 hakims! I got one hakim and an fn-49 en route, I figure that is enough 8mm semi-autos as I only have a couple k stashed. I need something semi in x54R.

did you get that M44 group with the bayonet extended or retracted? Thats pretty good even for offhand shooting.

Bayonet was extended on the off-hand shots. Then retracted for the bench shots. I don't know if it makes any difference though. I'll try and find out the next time I go to the range.

I would like to find an FN 49 for a reasonable price, they just don't seem to appear where I'm looking LOL. I'd also like to find something in semi X54, and once again, at a price I'm willing to pay. I'm just not going to shell out $600 plus on something I'm going to shoot to death LOL.

For now, I'm happy with my Hakims and other Milsuprs. Now just finding ammo for the 8mm is getting hard, but I stocked up before hand.

That fire ball gave the M44 a nick name in russian that translated into english as Dragons breath, or Dragons Fire. I'll ask some russkies where I work some time about that again. But you should have a go one day in the future shooting it at night! That spits the most fire and light out of any rifle my friends and I have ever shot.

I do know that on the 91/30 that with the bayonet off that the one I owned shot to the right than when I put the bayonet on it. When the bayonet was on I was hitting closer to the center of the target. Rumor has it that the 91/30 was made to have the bayonet on it all the time. So the rifle was always sighted with the bayonet on. Again just some stories I have heard, but to be honest the difference between the two were neglible, just as I said with the bayo off my groupings were always a little to the right of where I was aiming. Maybe at 200 yds that would be a big deal but at 100 or 50 it ain't such a big thing for a used military rifle.

Wow 200 rds thru an M44. Your shoulder must be hurtin'. I shoot 100 thru my 91/30 w/rubber buttpad and I get a little sore. Nice shooting.
