    During your collecting...M1

    Gentlemen,
.. on the M1 Garand Rifle what part did you find or buy at a Gun Show/Shop that you think was your best deal. Either by trade or price that you now own. If you have a pic post it. I am sure the guys would like to see what you have.

NOTICE REASON FOR NOT GOING INTO PRODUCTION ON PIC BELOW?!?

Could use some help Check the sites. TIA
    Thanks again

Well I have never been able to get any deals on Garands or parts.. but!! I was GIVEN a honest to goodness REAL GI flip sight a few months ago as well as a type I barrel band for my IBM.... Both parts are probably worth several hundred dollars on E-bay or to some collector.. but since both parts were given to me by someone who knos I love these rifles I won;t sell them (the band is on my IBM now)

I believe that the CMP gave me a great deal on my garand. I am very happy with it and surprised at the accuracy especially since the front sight base moves around a little.

Speaking of that has anyone tried peening the spleens to tighten up the front sight base and is it difficult or should have a smith take care of it for me?

When I first had my Garand converted to .308 with a Fulton Armory barrel, the gas cylinder sat loose. I had a smith in my area peen the barrel splines so now the gas cylinder does not move at all, and the rifle will shoot surplus South African 7.62x51 NATO into 2" or less at 100 meters.

I don't know how easy it is to do yourself... supposedly it's a really easy mod but I didn't have the proper tools available, nor the time to do it, nor the confidence to take a hammer anywhere NEAR my barrel

Peened the splines on two M1s, a '45 SA and a '56 HRA. Both worked out well. Used a 5/8" socket from my 1/4" drive set and whacked one it toward the inside area of engagement until the cylinder had to be lightly drifted on the barrel.

If you do this, just be certain you're happy with the front handguard because to get it off you have to take the gas cylinder off. That will start to loosen it up again.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only parts I had to replace on my M1s were a couple of oprod springs from Orion 7 via eBay, and a rear sight cover/spring for the SA from Northridge at the "Crossroads of the West" gunshow about a year ago. Oprod springs worked out OK. Sight cover took a coupla tries before I had a tight aperture.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Clancy:

It's amazing to me that Garand and Springfield Armory were able finally to get the cost of the M1 down to where they could be mass produced considering all the forgings, hand machine work and clearances that must've been involved.

            Good stuff!

              mousegun,
I have some breakdown files on jig's fix's used on the M1 Garand during Production. Ordnance and SA had to "sell" the M1 Garand to other units. Their main problem was funds. So there was a lot of weird stuff going on.
Thanks again I just might post of those files.
