Which Garand?

Hello,

I have a couple Garands and am looking into making my next purchase. My only two choices are a Dani Woodless or a Greek Rack Grade. I do not have a spare set of wood, but have read that the Danish rifles are supposed to be in better shape then the Greek rifles, is this true? Which Garand would you guys recommend buying? I know the carbines are coming and this purchase will not affect the purchase of that rifle in any way.

Sounds like if you want a Dane-- Better move fast; one other board has a guy that lives 13 miles from the N. Store & all the danes were pulled....he said he was told to fill remaining orders.......................

Nothin' wrong with the greeks; granted I aint had experience with the rack-greeks, only the Service and Fields..... But they WERE once USGI so dont let the name fool ya' or that they might have a different part or two on 'em.

Here's one of my fields in new garb; only part(s) replaced were stock and i painted the gas cyl.

My impression from chatting on the CMP boards:

If you want a rifle with a low serial number and early features, then you want a woodless Dane. There are many sources of wood out there, I bought my stock and hardware from Doug's Stockpile (http://www.dougsstockpile.com/, ask for an almost-handpicked) and my handguards from Ebay, ran about $100 all told for the missing furniture.

If you want one that will be complete (i.e. with a stock), and don't care if it's not in perfect shape or seen a lot of post-war rebuilds, then you want a Greek rack-grade.

If you want a good shooter you can either roll the dice with the Greek RG and hope that you get a decent barrel (and rebarrel it if it doesn't), or you can fly out to Anniston on Thursday morning and grab a Danish field-grade (they have them in the stores, but they are not available by mail order, and the stores are selling out fast).

P.S. And if you do want a woodless Dane, they are also selling out fast, so you should order it this week, if it's not already too late.

Another, more expensive, option is to buy a barreled receiver (which have excellent barrels and finish) and a rack grade and build a new rifle with the BR and the parts from the RG. Then you can sell the excess BR to recoup some of your costs.
