Golden State Arms: Santa Fe Mountaineer

Found this in my father in-law's garage, caked with dirt/mud and cobwebs. I tried cleaning it up as much i could with what i had. I know very little about Enfields so not quite sure what internals are missing. From looking at an exploded parts diagram, it looks like only the sear spring. When i put pressure on the sear the bolt catches fine. The safety works, but when released without pressure on the sear the hammer will drop.

Like i said. I know nothing about Enfield rifles. Would this be a No4 receiver? I would like to order a sear spring for it, but there are different types and i want to make sure i get the right one.

I was also wondering if anyone knew if this sporter stock would fit. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/sto...tail.aspx?p=79

I found a couple of sites regarding Golden State Arms here and here, and i'm in the process of registering at Enfield-Rifles.com.
But i know there are a lot of knowledgeable members here, so any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and the barrel is in great shape. It looks like it was never even fired.

Before we left i decided to run back out to the garage and snap a few picks. Not very high quality as i was in a hurry.

Overall your rifle seems to be a No.4 Mk1 rifle. The signs are the lightening cuts on the bolt body and knob, the safety and cocking piece and the bolt retainer. The trigger is NOT mounted on the reciever making it a Mk1 instead of a MkII.

To order parts I'd go with Numrich:

These files are schematics and parts lists from our catalog. They are in PDF format which means you can save the schematic to your computer, zoom in or out on

As for the stock, you already have, IMO, one of the better sporter buttstock out there already, do not make it worse. I'd order just the forestock to go with the rear you already have. Matter of fact, if you post on the various boards I'm sure you'll find someone that will sell off their No4 MkI stock for cheap when they sporterize it.

There's something weird about your triggerguard. It looks bent.

As long as the barrel is in good shape it should be a nice shooter. Most Enfields are more accurate with the full-length forearm which puts upward pressure on the bottom of the barrel just behind the front sight.

            Cool! Thanks Devo.

Bobfried, Thank you for the link and advice. I didn't want to put the synthetic stock and buttstock on, but it was the only one i could find. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I went ahead and ordered a sporter forend, spring, and magazine. I'll post pics of it as soon as they upload to photobucket.

Edit: Here it is. Not too bad for a $48 rifle.

sitting next to a regular size enfield

i'm not so sure that the an original stock would fit, because of the rear sight placement, and shorter barrel

Can you post a pic of the stampings on the barrel? I just ran into a "Weird" enfield myself and do recall it was stamped "Santa Fe" on the barrel.

I'll be able to post more pics next sunday, as it is with my father in law. But if i can remember correctly it was Golden State Arms, Pasadena, Ca.: Santa Fe Mountaineer

It seems like one of my links is dead now and that was the one that had the different Santa Fe models, but if you google Golden State Arms you should be able to find it

It was from another enfield. the original was chopped down about four inches. the new(NOS) is full length.
