    Low Prod at Win/M1

    Gentlemen,
Lets let the new guys take a look at this one.
Take a good look at this file. The date is April 1942. We are now 5 months into WW2. Ordnance wants Winchester to up its Production on the M1 Garand.

What do you think Ordnance should do to up Production at Winchester ?
Some data has been posted before others have not.

    Thanks again

Seems to me it's a contract problem: set the goals, if Win doesn't meet 'em, they don't get paid.

With Win 35% still in civilian production, seems they aren't in the real world yet.

      mousegun,
At Win's startup for production they charged 165 USD per Rifle.

Holy crap!!! Doesn't the military pay like $300/rifle for M16s in today's dollars!? How much were the other producers charging? It sounds an awful lot like war profiteering to me.

I'm interested to see how Ordinance actually did this. I'm more familiar with problems like this from Winchester's end. I can see a new line being slow, and only having one full shift, since you're ironing bugs out on new equipment and there are training issues sometimes. But if this went on for more than 3 or 4 months, I'd be really surprised.

That's with modern factory machinery and plenty of lower-cost production parts, e.g. aluminum and plastic.

IIRC, one Garand took a heck of a lot of man hours to build. I would expect the quality of workmanship to be higher as well.
