    Dominican Rep Mauser C&R status?

I have an old Dominican Republic Mauser that was rebuilt in 1961 by Dom Republic. The receivers on these were from old Brazilian surplus, definitely older than 50 years old. So my question: Does the C&R status come from the ORIGINAL date of manufacture, thus making this a true C&R, or does is come from the date of re-arsenal? Thus only 49 year and not C&R? Thanks for any clarification on this. c good

What do you mean rebuilt? What matters is the receiver; if it is original caliber it is an old gun, if it has been changed from the mauser cartridge the new date applies. If the stock was sporterized I think it is still ok.

From reading your other post it sounds like you think the DR just put on a new barrel? If that is the case it is still as old as its original manufacture.

The rifle is a 1908 Brazilian DWM Mauser that was sold to the Dominican Republic in 1961 and refurbished with new armory marks. They are in the original configuration (i.e. they look like every other M98) including original 7x57 caliber.

      I think C&R, but I'm no expert.

I'm not an expert either. I believe as long as original configuration is maintained, it goes to the date of the receiver as to whether it has C&R status by virtue of age.

I am fairly certain that a sporterized stock breaks the original configuration -- but, I see a lot of folks on Gunbroker selling sporterized mil surps as C&R.

There is a company in northern CA that restores old mil surps such as 1903 Springfields. They refinish, rebarrel, et cetera. They maintain original configuration and sell to C&R holders.

If the caliber was changed from 7x57 to .30-06, I don't think it still qualifies as C&R. But I'm not SURE about that because I've seen M95 Chilean Mausers that were pre-1898 actions rebarreled to .257 Roberts and .300 Savage that had been sold by a gunsmith as "legal antiques" with NO firearm paperwork.

This is exactly the case with this one. Original configuration, not modified in anyway since being refurbished with the new armory marks. Still in original 7x57 caliber. Thanks for the info so far everyone. C&R eligible? c good

If you want to know C&R status, you need to contact ATF, not CADOJ. C&Rs are regulated by the feds, not by the state.

and re-arsenalling should not matter at all. Many firearms were re-arsenalled (freshed up) without losing C&R status.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Typically the date is going to go off of the date of manufacture of the receiver; that is the only part of a gun that is considered a "firearm". Refurbishment does not replace the receiver of a weapon. If it did, you would go by the date of manufacture of the new receiver. If you are unsure, contact the ATF.

Yes your Dominican Mauser is a C&R both federally and in Calif.

The Feds declared All original military bolt action and semi automatic rifles Mfd. between 1899 and 1946 to be C&R's.

The only thing done to the Dominicans was the original Brazilian crest was removed and the Dominicans then placed their markings on them. They still retained all their original military characteristics. So they would still be a C&R to the feds.

In California the requirement is to have been manufactured at least 50 years ago. The Brazilian 1908 rifles were all built between 1908 and 1916 I believe (none later than 1935) so it would still qualify for California. California has no requirement that the original markings must be intact.
