    Mauser sight question

I have a buddy that owns a 98K, and he says that he has some issues with its tangent iron sights. To be specific I think it's the hooded front sight.

More or less, here what he told me:
Okay, I don't know that you're familiar enough with Mauser tangent sights to tell me what my problem is, but my gun is shooting high and to the left and I don't know how to fix it seeing it involves the iron sights. At one hundred yards I have trouble hitting anything closer than the 7 ring and that is after compensation. At 300 yards I do not have a problem, but I have a problem at 100 and 200yards. It is not just me either, my friends and my father have the same problem. I understand that there is a tool for front sight adjustment, but number one that wouldn't help with the elevation problem, and I would rather put the money toward ammo. Can you help me out with this, or lead to someone that can?

I did get to shoot this particular Mauser once; I set the rear tangent to "2" for 200yd shots, and I couldn't get anything on paper; it was shooting too high. I think I might have hit the cardboard. I'll confess that I don't know enough about hardcore rifle shooting to help him out, but I figure the fine folks at Cal Guns might.

Can you help me help him?

To fix the windage error the front sight blade needs to be drifted to the left (as viewed from the rear of the rifle). It is worth getting the right tool for $29.95

For the elevation error the front sight blade needs to be taller. Some people put some JB Weld epoxy on the top of the blade, let it cure, then file it down progressively, checked by firing rounds, until it is the right height.

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

The elevation issue may be due to the sight being calibrated in Meters not yards. 200 M =/= 200 yards. Try 200 yards but holding low on the target.

Here's an article showing the general idea of adjusting a front sight for windage: http://surplusrifle.com/shooting/mosinsights/index.asp and another article showing how a front sight can be altered for elevation: http://www.surplusrifle.com/sights/frontsight/index.asp

Remember also, that 98K sights are regulated for 198 gr ammo. If you are using other stuff, like the 154 gr, that can throw you off.

IIRC, I believe that k98's were sighted in at 300 meters. If it's shooting high, you could use the 6 o'clock hold. The old doctrine of "aim for the belt, to hit in the chest" applies here.

If it's a K98k the lowest range setting is 100 meters.
