thinking about building a k98 sniper

I have wanted one for a long time but I cant afford one. Plus, after shelling out $3000+ I definatly wouldnt want to shoot it. I have been considering building a repro but wasnt confident about my abilities in drilling the action myself. Well I just found out I have a gunsmith living up the street and he said he will drill and tap my receiver for nothing.
This got me looking up what parts I would need and really looking at the cost. I found sniper safeties for $39 (repro), LSR mount, base, screws, and "vintage" scope for $499 (repro). What else would I need?
As for the rifle, I have a BYF 41 but I dont want to use it. It was my first k98. I see alot of repros built on BNZ rifles. Is that the rifle a sniper was built on? I would like to use the correct rifle. I dont want to be the guy with a PU scope on a M44!

As you have already discovered, a LSR build is probably the easiest and cheapest. Repro parts are available for about the prices you stated. Those are pretty much all the parts needed. However do pick out a good shooter before committing everything into it. A late BCD would be correct and BCD 4 guns are fairly common. It's pretty easy to get it all done, but it's not an inexpensive project. Here is the one i did with a bcd45, repro mount, and original zeiss 4x scope.

If your going to shoot it a repro is the way to go, real snipers were going for around 10k not long ago. tTe LSR is the easiest and most common of repro's
I think mauser did allot of snipers not sure about the bnz guns. I would try to find the sniper edition of backbone of the wehrmacht for more detailed info before starting.

one word of warning. My receiver was so damn hard I had to use a cobalt drill and tap for the scope mount. It was a bee-yatch!. I still have the tooling incase you live in so-cal.

Thanks for the replies. My byf is a real good shooter but like I said, I dont want to use it plus I didnt think it was a correct rifle to use. The wife should love this new adventure...........

I bet you used a bcd gun. They are known to have particularly hard receivers.

If your BCD is all matching then you probably shouldn't use it. Get a R/C one and use that as your sniper.

Good point. I need to add my disclaimer...no original condition k98 was used to make my LSR repro. It is a russian capture that was 'restored' to look period original.

I picked up four 1945 RC dou's with excellent barrels and built a High Turret, LSR and SSR ( using Zielvier glass ) next is a Swept Back. Accumounts best place for mounts.

NO WAY would I use a vet bringback. Its going to be an RC all the way. I like shooting my guns and would feel uncomfortable shooting something like that. Maybe I'll use my BYF for another style.

Well all the parts are finally here for my LSR build. I went to my gunsmith today and learned that indeed, bcd receivers are incredibly hard. Unfortunatly my gunsmith does not have carbide drills either. AHHHHH Im so close!! Anyway he ordered some carbide drills and hopefully they will be here quickly and I can finish this build.
