Gew 98? K98? Help?

I picked this rifle up the other day at my favorite gunsmith on their used and bargain rack, I think it was a trade in. I am having difficulties identifying it though. I think its german and I believe its a Gew 98 but its doesnt look like a correct configuration, more like a 98K?, Cupped but plate etc. I have not been able to find much info but maybe you guys can help me out. There are NO Import markings that are visiable, And what looks like Imperial crown proof markings and a few different eagle style proof markings in addition to those? Its hard to get a clear picture of the proof markings or I would have a pic up. It does say GEW 98 on the reciever and on the opposit side a smaller s/42g marking near the RSB. I just hope it was worth the 200 bucks I paid for it. Again, Thanks for any help in advance.

thanks! So what would the model designation be? m48? I kinda had that yugo was somewhere in its heritage because the numbers on the stock are stamped similiar to my yugo sks.

Its definately a 98k, just a conversion from a ww1 gew rifle, also its been rebarreled to 98k specs, look at the waffenamps on the barrel...theres a few of these rifles floating around...

The best designation would be "reworked Gew98/K98k". It was likely reworked the first time by the Germans before World War II to either "Gew98M" configuration or Kar98b configuration, and then captured by the Yugoslavs (who stamped the numbers on the stock) and reworked to K98k configuration. It might have been refurbished by the Yugoslavs more than once because it looks like the stock was previously used on a different rifle, that's why there is another set of numbers stamped under the newer set of numbers (that should match the last digits of the serial number). It started out as a Gew98 and ended up as a K98k.

It's hard to say more based on the limited pictures provided. If you want a more expert assessment, take more pictures (using the macro setting for closeups) of all markings on the receiver, barrel, bolt, stock (including any numbers inside the stock and handguard), triggerguard, and bands and post them at http://forums.gunboards.com/forumdis...y-Mauser-Forum

It is an interesting rifle that is definitely worth more than $200. It is very possible that it was used in both World Wars.
