    Mosin Help + Cosmoline tips

Hey guys, I have had an M38 for some time now, father purchased it for us to go shooting with when I was younger. it shoots like **** at least I think so, and it has the sticky bolt syndrome.

Anyone in the Inland empire that knows the ins/outs of a Mosin? I dont trust gunsmiths too much figured Id try and see if theres a pro Cal Gunner out there.

2nd question: I purchased a USGI lower parts kit for my AR15 build, lucky for me its drenched in a bag of cosmoline...any tips / advice on how to remove it?

    Thanks in advance.

Heat liquefies cosmoline, then it is easily wiped off. A blow drier works well. Another technique if it is sunny is to wrap the item(s) in paper towels, put them in a black plastic garbage bag, put the bag in a car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up. You can also put the items in a pan in the oven on low heat.

Brake cleaner spray will remove what is left, but cosmoline provides protection from corrosion so it isn't necessary or desirable to remove every last molecule. I remove just enough so that it isn't greasy or messy.
    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Lots of stuff on youtube about sticky bolt syndrome. My favorite is from a guy named Iraqveteran

A trick that worked for me was to clean it good,
and then put a brush on a cleaning rod and chuck it in a cordless drill. Clean the chamber where the bullet goes very good with the brush spinning.

Then take the drill to the range and after shooting 20 or thirty rounds, clean it again with the drill.

You can also put some patches on the brush and you will see the c**p that gets cleaned out.

Just clean it, then it will shoot good. The problem is always, always cleaning out the old cosmo.

Gasoline has never failed me with cosmoline.

get a pickle jar or paint can. throw in your small parts and soak em in gas.

They wipe clean the next day. Then, I take that dirty gas and clean out the action with a brass brush.

stinky, but very fast and has worked for me at least. just make sure to ventilate

To get rid of cosmoline, I use kerosene, because I had some laying around. kerosene on an old toothbrush.

.45cal nylon brush + cordless drill

                  works really well, surprisingly.

I soak the metal in kerosine. It's safer than gasoline and seems to do a better job than gasoline. After soaking over night, use an old toothbrush to get any remaining dried gunk out of the nooks and crannies.

Kerosene, mineral spirits, and gasoline all work equally well for cosmoline. I personally think mineral spirits are the most effective, but any non-polar hydrocarbon solvent (which all three are) will work. Gasoline is often easiest because if you own a lawnmower, you probably have 5 gallons in your garage at this very moment.

I normally get a jug of mineral spirits, take everything apart, and chuck it into a container covered in whatever solvent was on hand. The oil drain pans you use for cars are great for this - cost about $1, and you never have to worry about it accidentally getting used to store food in later.
