I got my new Field Grade M1 from CMP on Friday. Didn't really have time to mess with since I figured it was full of cosmoline like my wifes Correct Grade had been. Man was it rough looking.
A 868,xxx Springfield SN from September 1942 I think. Looks like it was in a war! I swear someone must have beat whole squad of Germans to death with it.
So Sunday morning comes around and I'm getting ready to go to a run and gun. I figure, what the hell, I have a few minutes, I'll look over the new Field Grade. I tore it down and realized it was not full of cosmoline. It appeared to be lightly oiled and greased with very little cosmoline on it other than in the wood, sticky nasty wood. I gave it a five minute clean and lube and put in the car next to my Tacticool scoped out M1A. When the rifle stage came around later that day I was torn on which rife to use. I asked the guys I was with if I could pop off a couple of rounds in the Garand to see if it even functioned properly. I dialed the sights to center and zero and popped off a shot offhand at a bowling pin at ~35 yards, nailed it. um okay, wasn't expecting that. It was a fluke right?
So I took another offhand shot at a steel plate at ~100 yards, nailed it. Now I really didn't know what I was going to shoot for the stage. Mind you everyone else was using poodle shooters and the stage was a run and gun. I said what the hell and used the Garand. I cleared the 23 round stage with 23 rounds and had so much fun I didn't even ask about my score. The R.O. actually gave me a high five after I showed clear! I blew down one of the target stands that had barely moved for the .223 crowd. Damn it was fun. They said I had to pay for one of the steel targets since I blew a hole in it. They were kidding of course.
