There is also a shoulder shape change on the 30-03 to 30-06, the ammo is not interchangable.

The naming of cartridges is a giant mess.
30-30 means a 30 cal bullet with 30 grains of black powder behind it.
30-40 Krag was...yup, 30 cal with 40 grains of powder.

Older naming type:
45-70-500 was a 45 cal, 70 grains of powder, 500 grain bullet.

Someday every gunny needs to get a copy of "Cartridges of the World" and give it a good read. Great restroom reader!
It will help make some sense out of all the cartridges out there.

didnt the second 30 in .30-30 have something to do with the blackpowder grains loading when it was a BP cartridge?? similar to .45-70 and some of the other BP centerfire cartridges??

yes the book tells a lot, i have several books on this question and look into them all at some time or the other.

but there will always be questions out there, so many deffernt ways to "label" a round/bullet/charge/etc it will always be a problem.

much better to ask a question, then to have a dumb mistake.

So I am curious...

What kind of .30 caliber round do you have that lead you to ask the question? What do the markings on the head stamp say? Do you have a box of ammo and if so what does the box the ammunition came in marked in a particular way? We (speaking of the other members of the forum and I) might be able to tell you specifically what type of ammunition you have if you can give us more information. While some of the ammunition is fine to shoot, some older ammo has a corrosive primer component that requires different cleaning procedures. And sometimes the older ammo is collectable.

And I agree with packnrat, there are no stupid/dumb questions. Because someone else may have the same question and not ask, instead going ahead and trying to shoot the improper ammo in a gun with disastrous results.

Oh yeah that way someone wouldn't accidentally chamber the wrong round in the wrong rifle. The M1903 was originally chambered for the .30-03 so what they did was cut the barrel down a few thousandths of an inch and re-cut the chamber for .30-06 until the tooling could be redone.
