    If you could...M1

    Gentlemen
...change one thing on the M1 Garand Rifle working on it in the testing with Mr. Garand, what change would you make to this new weapon system. There are two (2) rules that you must go by. One NO DETACHABLE MAG. The second rule is it must remain as a SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE only. Follow those and see what you would come up with.

    Thanks again

I'd extend the magaze a la Lee Enfield...maybe up to an even ten rounds.

Better stock (with adjustable buttstock and check rest) and a flash hider. Also would increase mag capacity to 10rds as well see if there can be less smaller parts made into one (in other words less parts).

Did you guys know the Garand was originally designed with a 10 round clip? using the .276 cartridge.

Anyway, the changes I would make... with the exception to the removable mag and select fire would be the features the M14 has.

Chamber it in an intermediate, something like 6.8 SPC. .276 maybe?

I'm divided on the whole en-bloc clip or charge it with stripper clips. A stripper-compatible mag design would have made it easier to top off, and would have been more compatible with loading one round at a time, meaning scoped versions are a lot more feasible.

Then again, the en-bloc is lightning fast for reloading an empty rifle.

Stripper clips would probably be more compatible with a 20-round mag, though.

That would be the EASY answer since that was the next developmental step But hey- those were/are good ideas!!!

Instead of a fixed en-bloc system, I would use a fixed mag fed by stripper clips, put on an integral flash hider, and have the rounds eject to the side for easy scope mounting.

The Garand is really pretty good as is, but this sort of stuff would increase usability a bit.

                            Gentlemen,
Some great comebacks. I said NO Detachable Mag. I would have setup a 20 round mag that was NOT Detachable but like the Garand's son the M14 loading from a stripper clip. For ready load and toping off you mag.
Thanks again guys some great input.

I'd add a bolt hold open lever which prevented the dang bolt from flying forward and snapping on your thumb the second the clip was in place.
