Ebay LER scope mount on Mauser and range report

I went out to Hodge rd today and decided to see if the ebay mount was going to hold up on the VZ-24. I had heard many rumors of this mount failing to hold zero and ditched more in favor of the S&K style mounts or drilling and tapping altogether for Mausers. I decided to give it a go instead (and due to the fact that I had already ordered the mount before discovering the more positive reviews for other mounts).

I set up a target at 50 yards, bore sighted it by removing the bolt and looking through the bore/aligning the reticle on the bulls eye. All ammo used was corrosive surplus.

I shot my first group which was horrid. The group wound up being about 7 inches with one not on the paper. I made the necessary adjustments after inspecting the shot placement and shot my 2nd/3rd/4th/5th and 6th group at 50 yards.

About 2 shots out of every one of these trials wound up being only about an inch to half inch close to each other and pretty close to the bulls eye. All other shots were almost all flyers landing as far as 7+ inches away from the other few; some not even hitting the paper at 50 yards.

I reviewed my shooting technique and was observed by my buddy and seemed to be shooting well with a decent rest, no flinching and slow trigger pull.

Just to assure myself, I shot my buddy's yugo Mauser and put a + / - 3 inch group with iron sights on the center bulls eye. (Yes, I will admit that I am not the best shot, but I think this is only the 3rd or 4th time I've been out shooting rifles; hopefully I get better!)

Now my questions to you guys:

Has your experience with these mounts been the same?

Does this sound like a result directly due to the mount?

Has anyone mounted this type of mount and obtained similar or differing results (that you know of) ?

Aim at the bull's eye, fire three shots. Center the scope on the center of the three shots, fire three more shots. If the group is still large then the gun or the scope has a problem, Of course suspect scope/mount first if gun is OK with iron sights. I had a similiar probem with a .22lr and figured out the scope was moving.

I checked the mount again today and noticed that it was indeed moving/not tight and the shot placement(s) was not my fault. Live and learn, I guess.

I saw a Made in China mount like that at a gunshow yesterday. I don't know if the ebay one is the same. There is a Made in USA mount, maybe it would work better http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2...ER_SCOPE_MOUNT

I had a red dot scope mounted on a Mosin 91/30 and two rounds down range and it was off zero. Original mount had two bolts. Went to the hardware store and got three more, now solid as a rock and works great after 500 rounds. Milsurp rifles of large caliber are tough on scope mounts.

Where did you put the other three? and do you have pictures? I'm thinking of switching the mount over to my 91/30 on the dovetail underneath the rear sight. It's a bummer because I much prefer the Mauser safety :/

It's a cheap BSA Red Dot (actually, red, green or blue) that I picked up for $30. It is mounted to the dovetail that is under the rear sight. Mine was easy to remove as it was not silver soldered, just pinned. Here is a picture. Notice the large thumbscrew on the left. Had the same on the right but I removed it and added three 1/8" bolts with nylon locking nuts and washers. Works well.

NO, it's a 1X Red Dot but beats the heck out of iron sights for a 62 year old. Put a MoJo sight on my M38, better than the original sights as you can adjust elevation and windage without a ball peen hammer.

I think rings might work (haven't tried it) but I would get steel one piece rings with at least three clamp points. I also read somewhere that a guy put three rings on the dovetail to mount a scout scope. The dovetail is not very deep so you have to have a lot of clamp pressure to hold a scope in place. My setup mounted to the dovetail has been solid for nearly 400 rounds. The only thing that knocked it a tiny bit loose was an entire afternoon of 50's Bulgarian heavy ball. Even after that, it was still pretty solid.

Arib's set up looks like the cat's meow. Just don't try those cheap split rings from Wally World. Wouldn't even hold up on my Marlin 60.
