Are you are talking about the op rod tilt test? I had a rack grade from CMP that had the same issue.

I called CMP up and the Armorer told me that the tilt test was only if you wanted to test for "Match" quality, he told me to use a heavy grease where it rubbed. I've put about 500 rounds in that rifle with the "binding" op rod and so far no issues with accuracy or function.

If it really bothers you get a "new" op rod and try it out, do not try to bend your own op rod!

Determine where it is hanging up. You can relieve the barrel channel or ferrule if it just touches a little.

The CMP forums go into more detail for all things Garand.

You might try lightly coating the op-rod with grease and manually cycle the bolt. Look to see where the op-rod is hanging up / binding and then remove a little bit of material.

Wash rinse repeat . . . Even if you not building a match grade rifle, there's no reason not to wring every bit of accuracy possible.

Clean, inspect, verfiy put together correctly, grease, then shoot. Worry about it if you have problems with last task.

First do the tilt test with the action out of the stock. If it passes the tilt test out of the stock the problem is in the stock and/or ferrule. Figure out where it is rubbing and relieve that area with a file or sandpaper.

If it fails the tilt test the problem is with the front handguard, op rod, or worst of all, the receiver if it is a welded receiver. Check the front handguard for areas of contact. If the handguard is OK and the receiver has not been welded, the op rod might be bent incorrectly. There is a guy named Jim Swartz who can fix it and anything else wrong with the op rod.

Why not? I have one that a bad batch of 7.62 ammo bent the rod inside the front hand guard slot causing it to rub against the metal liner. I re bent it and haven't had any problems since.

In your case, you probably had nothing to lose. I've seen at least one person ruin a good op rod to trying to "fix" it when it was just rubbing against the stock.
