    Building an M1 Garand

I know the CMP has them for around $400, but the condition is up in the air. I've seen decent ones for around 600. And some that look like they were in a plane crash for the same price. Of course brand new ones are about 900, and I'm not sure if the parts are GI. Is is cheaper to build one myself? I mean cheaper than $400? I figure if I build it myself I have a better shot at quality parts. Have any of you guys done this?

It's definitely going to cost you more than $400 to build one from parts. Even if you got a reparked receiver from the CMP for $150 + $6.95 shipping, thus eliminating DROS fees, I can guarantee you won't be able to get the rest of the parts to build that rifle for $250 more ($400 minus $150 for the receiver). Stock metal sets along will cost you at least $50. It's hard just to find beat up stock metal sets.

Get the rack grade and clean up the stock on your own. If the barrel is so bad that it can't shoot, then have it rebarreled.

Don't sit around deciding on whether or not to get a rack grade. People sat around thinking whether or not to get a service grade and then they sold out. Then people sat around thinking whether or not to get a field grade and then they sold out. The same will happen to the rack grades.

No you will not be able to buy parts cheaper than 400.00. The "new" ones for 900.00 are most likely new manufacture Springfield Armory M1 Garands and do not compare to the workmanship found on a USGI M1.

Your best bet is to order a Rack grade from CMP and hope the barrel is in usable condition. If not, send the rifle out for rebuild.

Most of the Rack grade rifles will be fine as is or just require wood replacement.

I am building one right now out of mostly new unissued USGI parts or almost new USGI parts. I still have not purchased a barrel or stock and I have about $785 in it so far.

By the time I put a Krieger barrel and the Wenig stock on it I will have about $1,500 which is still about $500 less than Fulton will charge for their peerless grade.

If you want just a shooter, the CMP is the way to go.

The Garand Guy has a good reputation, but if you look at the criteria of an "issue grade", which is simply a throat erosion of 4 or 5, most of the Greek rack grades I've seen fit this.

I'm not sure how complete they are, but Northridge is selling Garand parts kits for $249.

Do you have anymore information on "Northridge" location and phone number would be nice.

I heard bad things about the kits from SARCO and not much about Northridge so I started piecing together my own kit from about 5 different places so far. There is this guy in Alabama but he is old school so you have to communicat by fax or phone and he doesn't take a credit card.
