Has anybody here used the schuster gas plug for their m1? I am thinking about getting one so I can use commercial ammo.

how exactly do those work? is there a guide that comes with it, or do you just keep firing and adjusting till you find the sweet spot?Comment

Yes. It bleeds out gas. Since all the gases from commercial ammo can damage it, you open the plug all the way so it turns it into a single shot. You slowly close the plug until the rifle starts operating correctly. You then lock the nut in place when you have results you want. It was actually kind of fun seeing how the adusting turned your rifle from single shot, to short stroking, to operating correctly.Comment

I wouldn't say that it reduces wear and tear... that'll happen just by use. It's the nature of things.Originally posted by AJAX22Anti gun BS...

Well, not so much that it'll reduce wear & tear, but that it'll reduce the excess battering and damage that can occur if you use commercial ammunition in a Garand. Personally, I shoot only M2 in my Garand. That stuff is definitely safe. Eventually, I'll be obtaining some match grade ammunition that is Garand-safe, just to see what my Garand can do with good ammunition.
With Garands, the problem isn't the strength of the receiver, bolt, or the barrel. Those parts can handle pretty much any commercially made .30-06 made. The problem lies with the op rod. Too much pressure at the gas port without the ability to bleed off excess gas in the piston chamber and you can end up with a bent op rod and a non-functional rifle.
Soo... I'd say that the adjustable gas plugs work, and work well! Just remember, with the continuously adjustable plug, every time you change ammo or even lots of ammo, you may have to re-adjust the plug for proper function. With the style that has specific plug sizes, once you know what works for a given load, you can go back to it easily... but you have to ensure that you don't lose the little parts.
The really variable port is probably going to be my next thing I get for my Garand.Comment

Psst, you can use commercial ammo in a M1 within the 150 to 165 grn range without an adjustable plug and not hurt anything. See attached letter, as this sheds some light on the subject. GI Ball is always the best, however I would not fret over using commercial either.Last edited by M1A Rifleman; 01-03-2011, 11:32 AM.The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment

A 2004 springfield armory M1 is NOT the same as a GI M1. SA's manual for their new M1 rifle recommends shooting commercial ammo. There have been several other instances where new SA M1's fell apart. It also says he used reloads. Reloads are not commercial ammo. This kaboom is either a QC issue or has more to do with using unkown reloaded ammo and is unrelated to using commercial ammo.Last edited by M1A Rifleman; 01-14-2010, 2:05 PM.The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment

The letter sheds new light on this for me.I have not been worried about a kaboom with the rifle because all commercial ammo is produced with in saami specs.I could gather that such a kaboom may have been caused by some sort of bore obstuction such as a not properly cleared squib or a slam fire.I had been worried about bending the op rod but I now see that may not be problem.sigpicComment
