    Sir,

If you haven't done so yet, check out Culvers Shooting Pages (jouster.com). Lots of good info regarding M1's, the CMP, pics and so on. Pleny of good info there.

I just got one. My initial (not too close) inspection looks like I've got a good barrel and action. I have an original stock and unstained different handgaurds with a scratch or two. I'll see about photos but it's not going to be soon.

Thanks Gene, anyone else? Seems like they might still be worth the money.

If that's all they have left then they are worth the money. I doubt you will find anything cheaper.

I was just concerned that they said the stocks might have names carved in. Guess I could always just buy a new boyds stock.

I had no carving on mine - just a couple pieces of modern wood and I think there I still some cosmoline in the main stock.

I've had two rack grades, neither had carvings but the wood needed replacing. Finish on both rifles were very good, one had the greek black and the other original park.

Best CMP ploy now is order a racker ($395) plus a barreled receiver ($300). If the racker barrel doesn't shoot well, put the racker parts on the barreled receiver. If the racker wood's bad, get a CMP or Boyd's stock and you'll have a service grade equivalent JCG eligible shooter with a great barrel and a spare receiver/barrel for plinking, all for $700, $780 if a new stock is needed.

Don't you have to check the barreled receiver's headspace with the replacement bolt if you did the swap-a-roo?

Yes. You should have a go gauge and a field gauge. You may as well get a no-go gauge, but that's not necessary unless you are rebarrelling brand new barrels yourself (and chamber reaming).

I have a number of Greek returns, and out of about 8 I can think of, only one was a trasher. Bad barrel, blown out muzzle. One bad stock, which they replaced. No pitting in any of the CMP rifles I have had, although the finish was almost gone on some. No sweat - I was reparking them all anyhow.

If you get lucky, a Dane without wood at $300, a new stock at $120, and the stock metal at $50 puts you in a happy place. Unlucky - add $160 for a replacement barrel. Of course, at that price, you turn the wrenches.

Whatever you get, wear it out on the firing line. The Garand is SO sweet.

If you go the woodless Dane route and find that the barrel is trash you can always just send it in to Springfield Armory to rebarrel and re-parkerize the whole rifle. They will do the re-barrel fr $209 and re-park for $60 since the rifle is an old Springfield USGI. You can have a perfect USGI Garand with new walnut, park and barrel for under $700.

That's cool - didn't know Springfield did that. I have all the tools and tanks, etc, but to someone who was building one rifle - that's a good deal.
