    insta mount on 91/30

Has anyone used an Insta mount on a 91/30?

if so, why do you like/dislike it? What scope did you use to keep it somewhat authentic?

You need to use a "long eye relief" type scope... kinda like those pistol scopes they sell.

I have one on one of my Mosins. It's fine. It's not the most secure mount, but mine has held fine...it's not exactly a precision rifle. As stated above, you need to use a 'handgun' or 'scout' style scope with lots and lots of eye relief. They can be had for 30-3000 dollars, and the general scope rules apply (spend more, get more, if you can) Mine wears a cheapo NCStar scope, which everyone at the range, me, and even the gun laugh at, but again, it's held up fine for now. The main problem with Long Eye Relief scopes is that your field of view is very narrow (vs. a standard rifle scope) given the magnification factor. For this reason, going above 4x is usually a bad idea unless it's going to be a bench or stationary target only gun.

        drill and tap for scope?

This has been useful. I was thinking of adding a more powerful scope than one that was 4X. It sounds like I'll have to drill and tap the rifle for a 'regular' mount.

I have something similar to that but with a picatinny rail instead. Its very sturdy. I also bought a long eye relief scope for it..if you must know they aren't cheap even if its a cheapo ncstar one. Its better than destroying your mosin though with the other kit (you know the one that requires you to remove the bolt handle! )

            mount

I have one on a M38 with a ncstar 4x32. it is ok. the rifle will shoot a 9" pattern almost every time at 100yrds. that is good enough for me.

Happy to report that 7 out of my 8 5-shot groups today with the ncstar'd M38 were under 5" at 100 yards.

I really wish somebody would make the old style bolt. They show up on ebay now and then, and go for obscene amounts of money. I had my 91/30 at the range today, and got a 10" group with the iron sites at 100 yards, well except 1 shot, which went out of the target complete I do want to scope it though, and unless I find a sniper bolt for it (the cutting and tapping of the old bolt scares me) I will get the scout setup I suppose.

One decision is do you want a scout configuration. i.e. short barrel gun with a long eye relief scope, or a higher power rear mount sniper? I have both. A scout is for close in work and you keep both eyes open! Kind of like the PIP feature on your TV. This way your peripheral view is active and the scope field of view isn't so important. But when your hunkered down with a long range rifle and very limited with your FOV in the scope, just hope you got someone watch'n your back, cause you're vulnerable with zip peripheral vision.
Decision 2, do you want to bubba a gun? I wasn't too eager to bubba a historic military rifle (I don't dare think about it with my Enfield No.4 even though it was a $129 Big5 deal), but to get it out my system, I did mess with a couple of Mosin's (cheaper/less rare). It seemed to me there were options. I did the scout mount a the shorter M38 (easily reversible back to original). I did the rear mount on the long M30. But for the rear mount there was a choice, the ATI weaver mount or a repro PU side mount. Both require drill/tap of the receiver and the PU needs notching the stock too (non-reversible). Both require a bent bolt. With the ATI you can use any scope, 1" or 30mm tube, and front bell can be large. The PU is very limited, because the rings are built-in and of a "C-clamp" design (see photo) so you have to slide the scope into the clamp. Front tube must be straight. Very few scopes are like this and only low power 4X (the historic 1891/30 was a low power straight tube scope). I got the bent bolt at gun show for $39 no tax. On-line looks higher, try militarygunsupply.com. I got just the mount at accumounts.com, but he offers a repro kit with mount, bent bolt and 4x Chinese scope for ~$200. Don't ask me about the authentic Russian parts, I wasn't willing to pay that.

PU mount - limited scope choices.

ATI - can use any scope.

I'm going to get some dies and reload some lighter loads for the 7.62x54R like I did for my 303. I shot a box of 20 175g surplus rounds yesterday with just my t-shirt/no shooting jacket in my 1891/38 with B-square scout mount and I was whipped The mount held up better than my shoulder. With that kind of recoil I think you better have a solidly attached mount to hold zero.

Yeah, I was shooting 180g stuff yesterday, and my shoulder is quite sore today (also just a t-shirt). Makes me almost leary of a rear mount scope, I don't want scope eye
