    Cmp

California Rifle & Pistol Assoc. or Garand Collectors Assoc.

VFW also works if you are a war Veteran.

      Try the Garand Collectors Association

      or

      CRPA
Support Your Second Amendment Rights. The California Rifle & Pistol Association, founded in 1875, provides training in the safe, responsible, and enjoyable use of firearms; sanctions competitive shooting state championships; and fights for the constitutional right to keep and bear arms for those who choose to own a gun in California for sport, hunting, or self-defense.

I joined the Garand Collectors Association. It costs $25 for the year and you get their magazine. They also send your membership info to CMP.

Beware though, the membership is annual and your renewal date is September 1, regardless of when you join. If you join August 29th, you pay $25 and still have to renew on September 1st for another $25.

You may want to go ahead and join now; they are busy with renewals and new memberships.

Where abouts in CA are you? That would help narrow down suggestions. I belong to a qualified club in Escondido (north San Diego). Maybe check NRA webpage for affiliated clubs?

GCA gets you 4 color glossy newsletters/journals each year with interesting articles.

Most of the people I know who buy from the CMP use either the CRPA or their DD214 proving retired military.

I guess I'd better read the CMP site. I didn't know that just being ex-military made you eligible to buy from the CMP.

              Actually the CMP says:

"These special affiliates include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees. Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc."

So just having a D214 (ex-military) doesn't count, you'd have to be retired.

Yup, you have to be retired. Hence my statement: or their DD214 proving retired military. Military service in itself satisfies the marksmanship requirement, though.

If you are near San Jose, join the Zouaves. On the first saturday of each month you get training of operating the M1 and shoot a practice HiPower match.

                    From their FAQ page:
                    Q - How do I join?
Fill out the membership form and bring it to the practice match the first Saturday of every month (8am sharp).
Bring eye and ear protection if you have them, otherwise they will be provided.
Go through the match training that takes place before the practice match. You learn how to safely operate a M1 Garand and how a match is conducted.
Participate in the practice match. It finishes around noon.
$30 (new members) to join the club, $10 range fee plus $15 for the ammo draw ($55 total).
If you have your own M1 Garand you can bring it.

I originally joined jsut to collect Garands from the CMP, but had so much fun I have been going to the matches regularly the last couple years.

The Garand Collectors Asociation is the cheapest and easiest to join if you don't otherwise qualify. The only problem is the ATF processed my C&R and the DOJ processed my COE faster than the GCA processed my simple membership.

GCA is backlogged, about a month to process NEW membership
