One of each would be my vote. Actually, you can order one of each and 2 M1 Garands for me!

What would you do with 2 carbines? I voted for 1 carbine and 1 Garand

I voted for 1 of each, the carbine is fun, but the Garand is impressive. If you want a smile from ear to ear, get one of each

I'd say you might as well get 2 of each. 1 of each to beat the hell out of, then one of each to give to your kids. Or sell in 30 years for your a trip during your retirement.

I hit the choice 'follow your heart', cos, after all, thats what one should do, in my opinion.

That said, we've owned a M1 Garand and an M1 carbine for many years now, and participated in the local matches for years with the Garand.
(after developing a loading which would shoot to 'point-of-aim' a bit more consistently than the LC M2 ball then available from the DCM, which I'd carefully re-package in the issue M2 bandoleers for 'image' purposes)

The M1 carbine is its own experience, and, well, everyone should have one, thats all.

So.....my real opinion is......get one of each, but do whatever it takes (except crimes) to have the funding to get best condition ones.......the personal satisfaction in shooting and owning a 'near perfect' and carefully well-maintained rifle will persist long after the pain of allocating the funds for same will have long since been forgotten.

If the funding situation is such that you can only get one, then get the very best Garand you can get, preferably a H&R, if possible. The Garand is a 'real' rifle, which will be a lifetime investment. Actually, there are really only three things to consider.......condition, condition, and condition. (a gentleman who is now, sadly, no longer with us, but really knew Garands, told me that the combination of H&R make, with the LMR barrel, was optimal, if in exc. condition.)

M1 carbines are 'secondary' and will come up for sale relatively often in future. You'll always be able to find a deal on a carbine, from some individual, sooner or later.

              cheers

              Carla

It's a toss up, I say get the carbines because they are going to get more scarce at CMP, whereas the Garands will be around for a while, but buttom line go with your gut instinct.

I recommend also picking up some reading material in reference to the M1 Carbines and M1 Garands, some excellent resources are:

I'd get the 2 carbines. They are not going to sell out of Garands any time soon. They are supposedly just getting the Greek AF returns into the system. I'd probably wait a little longer before placing an order for a Garand to try and get one of the Greeks. If you want a HRA Garand then you 100% have to wait. The carbines do seem to be running out with no restock in sight. Ammo is hard to come by for both but carbine is a little easier (and mostly non-magnetic).

I don't do the note thing. If I worked at CMP and got a note, I'd probably try not to match the description . But the CMP employees seem to be nicer folks than me and would probably accomodate a reasonable request (i.e. WWII receiver for SA). I would imagine that the more you ask for, the less likely to get any of it. So I'd keep the request to a minimum and use common sense (i.e. nobody is asking for a crappy looking one so stuff like "nice one" is probably not value added).

Either way-- 2 carbines or 1 and 1, you can't lose. You'll be getting history in your hands.

Personally, I'd say 'don't worry' about finding a M1 carbine. The CMP may be running low on them, but they are coming up for sale by private owners surprisingly often.

The Garands are another matter......if you can get a 'high condition' Garand from CMP now, don't miss the opportunity.

Actually, condition is more important than specific manufacturer. The H&R Garands are more precisely machined, in some details, but only slightly better so than the Springfield production. Again, in my opinion, be prepared to 'pay the price' for a high condition Garand, and, years later, you'll be glad you did.

(The Garand we have is a common 1943 Springfield, was in very nice condition when we got it, and is the same now after we.....and quite a few friends, range newbies, etc, etc, ran several thousand rounds through it. Careful use, cleaning, and maintanence per the manual makes all the difference, to be sure.)

                          cheers

If i do order the the Garand, what would be the better chance of getting a WWII issued one, WRA, or SA? and i was only going to leave a note for an early year, as the old attidge goes, beggers cant be choosers, but im trying to get my WWII collection going, that the only reason I want the WWII issued Garand, Im not worried that much about condition of the Stock and such seeing as how that can always be replaced, Im just trying to get WWII then worry about condition. An other suggestions on Carbines anyone? As stated early Im looking at Winchester and Standard Productions, (hopefully a carbine guru sees this) If those arent good choices, Im also thinking about the Quality Hardware

                              Winchester = 100%
Springfield (as long as you request a WW2 serial number) = 90-95%

If you don't put in a request I would say odds are 50/50ish on the SA.
