Wow, I can't believe it's almost been a year since I posted this and haven't ordered a barrel yet lol.

I just ordered one this morning! It is for my project Krag I bought from the CMP. I will post pics for you all when it gets here. I bought the full length 30" rifle barrel to restore my cut-down rifle. Here are some pics:

Did you get the Krag from CMP? What grade is it? Thank you!

No "grades" are available in the Krags. They are all considered Junk, which is kind of a misnomer. Some guys on here have got some pretty nice rifles out of there.

Look at Toolman9000's posts, or that 5hundo guy. Looks like he's been banned but you can still see his pics...

I am really tempted to get an Krag from CMP, but I am weary of gambling on $450. Thanks for the reply!

I'm rebuilding a 1903 I got from CMP. The barrel was shot out: I didn't know that until I waiting a couple hundred rounds trying to learn to fire it. I didn't know much about guns at the time. I had to order a new sight leaf and new stock. I got the barrel awhile back from CMP and am just now getting it put in. Bain and Davis is quoting me $225-250 since it will need to be re parked. It's got some feeding issues too. My $500 CMP 1903 is becoming a $1200 gun!

You should. While you can get collector grade M1 Garands and Carbines from the CMP, most rifles are actually in "field grade" condition which means they are serviceable.

Also remember that most of these rifles except for "correct" grade rifles are "frankenstein" guns or guns rebuilt parts in some arsenal. So, (and this is just my opinion), there is no harm and picking up a "project gun" from the CMP and restoring it.

It's the luck of the draw really! People should be aware that these rifles could have sat in an armory somewhere, been through a real historical battle, or have been used as basic training rifles (YUK, I had one of these!). It's life will determine its condition.

An M1 garand I bought from them a few years back had the most horrendous stock damage you could imagine. It was loose, scraped, had deep gouges in it, and some douche carved into with a pocket knife. However, the barrel was immaculate because it had been built in 1953 so it probably wasn't shot much and used as a training rifle.

Krags were blued, so that's going to help you out a little. You could probably get by with one of the numerous "cold bluing" products available these days. It's not going to match the original finish but it will protect and you won't have to do the receiver and other parts...
