I would like to get a mauser, probably one in 8mm since it's still pretty cheap to get. Could anyone recommend one? I'm looking for a shooter not something to really hang on the wall and look at. I guess I'm looking not to spend more that maybe $250.00 OTD. thanks

Just about anything with a good bore. If you were closer to LA, this one:
M48's, Russian capture K98's (although they have gone up recently), even Turk m38's and 03s. And if you find a pile of ammo, you WILL get another mauser.*REMOVE THIS PART BEFORE POSTING* -
i'd recommend a vz24, they're abundant, cheap, and generally in better shape than the k98 russian captures that are everywhere.
the only thing that's a little weird with them is the sights begin at 300m, so if your eyes suck and you're one of those shooters who's into putting holes into tight groups on a piece of paper at 50yrds, it might be weird. however, if you're a longer-range shooter, they're not bad.
and yeah romanian 8mm spam cans are avail. from aim for cheap:

best quality and condtion in 8mm go with a yugo m24/47. these rifle were rebuilt in yugoslavia arsenals after ww2 and most were put into storage. so when you inspect one it should have nice blueing and a mint bore. I prefer this one over the m48. I own both.Comment

I myself am a fan of the K98, the Yugo M48 to me looks more like the fat cousin of mausers...That, and each K98 has a story all in its own and carries its own history!!WANT TO BUY and looking for shooter/beater/reenacting grade German Waffen proofed handguns from the WWII era. I just want shooters, Im not looking to spend oodles of money, I just want shootable examples to play with!!
!!!Also looking for a shooter/rack grade USGI M1 Carbine (Earlier the date the better)!!!
Wanna help me out? Email me at: mauser3340@gmail.com

The K98 is a good rifle. But the Yugo sells a less than a K98. I know what country the Yugo made and by what machinery and what people. All German. They are both good rifles. Hey how 'bout a Spanish model 93 or a Spanish FR-8? There is also the Portuguese model 1904. There have been nearly, from the begining a thousand types of Mausers. Hope you find what you are looking for. How many innocent people, i.e. Jews ect., were killed by that K98? One to many. I know its history but its pretty sad. Thank God for America."TRUST BUT, VERIFY"

If you want to look at it that way, how many innocent people did those Mosin-Nagants kill. People forget that Stalin had more people killed than Hitler. The K98 is a good rifle.
