    First C&R rifles!

I got my first shipment of C&R rifles today! Two Mosin Nagant M44's, metal finish is excellent - wood not so much but I'm happy.

Those are really nice! Did you find them from a retailer, or private seller? Seems like all of the places I look are out.

I got these from Century Arms, I believe that they still have them in.

nice lookin' m44s! congratulations and welcome to the club!

(might want to invest in the rubber pads for them tho, these have the reputation of kicking really bad, so it might be unpleasant if you're not used to it)

The wood finish is shellac and shellac is easy to touch up and repair. Newly applied shellac will combine with the current shellac finish http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=6548

Don't be a baby, shoot em once before getting a pad. Just make sure you shoulder it properly.

My Mossberg 500A hits the shoulder harder when firing magnum 00.

I agree about the Mosin Nagant carbines having very unpleasant recoil. This Past Recoil Pad works amazingly well. I won't shoot my Mosin Nagant carbines without it http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.co...st-recoil-pads

I bought my first M44 in 2003 and it definatly kicks like a mule but that dosen't bother me to much. Hell one time I shot it so much that when I got home I took off my shirt and I have a medium sized bruse on my shoulder.... good times.

I also sporterized one with the ATI Monte Carlo stock and it helps the recoil quite a bit.

Thanks for the refinishing tips from the poster above.

I can only imagine about the recoil, I shot my No. 5 Jungle Carbine on Monday and holy smokes that kicked like heck, though the No. 5 seems a bit lighter than the M38 or M44, though they may be comparable.

Congrats on the new purchases, there is something nice about that first C&R purchase, many more to come for you no doubt.

Anyone ever see a step by step refinishing guide for an M44? I have a similar problem with one I just picked up. The metal is awesome, but the stock sucks. I want to keep it original looking...just not ugly and dinged up.

The recoil on those isn't that bad. Now the Austrian M95 carbines kick. But Mosin Carbines aren't as horrible as people say. Try it out before you go get a pad. And if you decide that you absolutely must have one to shoot it, just go get one of the slip-on pads. They are under $20.

It kicks like mule and is loud as heck too!
