    Savage Super Sporter 30-06

    Hi All,

I inherited this Savage Super Sporter 30-06 from my grandfather. Serial number is 15xxx. Can anyone provide any other specifics on this for me? I've looked pretty extensively online and it seems the only option I have is to write a letter by hand and mail it to some guy in MA.

I intend to sell it, so as much info as can be provided would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Sav Super Sporter

I have a 3 digit serial # in 300 Savage. To be honest the mag is probably worth more than the rifle. I keep mine because dad gave it to me. I saw one at a gun store 6 years ago for $250, without a scope.

    Sincerely,

    Roger

Nice rifle there, J Bunny! Probably worth more as a family heirloom than any monetary value you'll get for it. Did a quick search and found this for you:
There's a section in that article which talks about the Super Sport.

Yours has the early style magazine and magazine release, which makes it pre-1936. You should really just hang onto it for the family history. You'd probably get less than $150 for it from a gunshop. Because of the rifle's age you can sell it without any paperwork to another California resident, but even then you would probably only get $200 to $250 for it.

Can you tell what kind of scope that is? It may be worth as much as the rifle to a collector if it is in good shape.

I think the scope is a Redfield. The 'R' (or whatever it is) is kind of faint. Pat. No. is also pretty faint. I can make out 18?7? It also says "Patented El Paso, Tex U.S.A". I can't see any other marks.

I bought one of these last year for $60 with 2 mags in .243. Sometimes I see them go for around $200 at best in perfect shape.

Procoyotehunter, I THINK that particular gun wasn't ever made in .243, just .250-3000, .300 Sav., .30-30 WCF, and .30-06; must have been a later Savage with clip you're thinking of. The .243 wasn't invented until after the Super Sporters were out of production (don't think they survived WWII). You may be thinking of the 110/111/112 series that Savage came up with later (same general idea but a better design, I think).

If you want to sell that gun, try mentioning it on the Savage Collectors forum at www.24hourcampfire.com, and then posting it on their free classifieds section. You might also try the www.savageshooters.com forum; I think it has a free classified section, too. Someone there may well want it, for more than folks are suggesting here.

Not much collector interest in these among the general pop; you need a Savage NUT! Guys on these Savage boards mentioned could suggest a fair price, if you asked.

Poster is right about the mag--just not obtainable, at least the original ones, and I'm not sure the aftermarket ones work (I know the Triple K mags for the related 23 series Savages don't work for crap).

If I had this and could afford to keep it, I would. Kinda neat, I think!

                  El Paso texas -- sounds like a Weaver scope -- Possibly a K- 2 1/2 or 4

They are really a pretty good weapon, light, sturdy, and accurate but not as well finished ( stamped trigger guard) as the competitive win or rem. Sold for about $45 as compared to 75 or so for win & rem. -- my ha-penny

if it were me I would keep it, like has been said before "worth more as a family heirloom than any monetary value you'll get for it."

                          just my $0.02
