    Gun Lock for C&R???

Just wondering if there is an exemption for C&R rifles for the having-to-buy-a-gun-lock law. I can't find one, but i'm hoping someone has dug one up. I know they're cheap, but like most of you I already have more locks than i need/want so i was hoping that i could bypass getting another when i pick up my 1939 Mosin Nagant 91/30 on monday if there is some C&R exemption. If not, does anyone with this rifle know of a good lock to buy? chances are i'll return it, but if it's a good one and cheap...maybe not. thanks

no exemption that I know if in CA for C&R firearms to be exempt from the gun lock law. You can fill out the safe affidavit for long gun purchases and be golden.

There is a federal exemption for C&R handguns to not need a lock, so in that case, one should be able to just fill out the safe affidavit and be covered.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

yeah but the safe affidavit at big 5 asks for some serious info, not just sign here saying you have a safe. would they audit this stuff ever, or if it was found that you didn't have one couldn't that screw you....wouldn't it be purgery or something? probably just being paranoid so i'll probably just buy the lock until i get a safe. thanks though, good info about the C&R handguns

Can't you just take one of the locks you already own with you? I've done that a couple times, was it illegal?

has to be purchased within 30 days and you have to show a receipt....some gun store owners will let it slide but realistically their supposed to have a copy of the receipt on file with their DROS papers. lame i know

                  this.

yah, don't fill out the safe affidavit if you don't have a qualifying safe. Yes, you do fill out the affidavit under penalty of perjury, http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/gsaff.pdf

Buy a lock then return it, problem solved. Any time I have to buy a firearm, I go to Walmart and buy a cheapo lock and then I give them the receipt and get my firearm. Couple days later I'll return to Walmart to shop and I'll return the lock. It's a sucky *** rule, but no one is forcing you to keep the lock. I don't have a gun safe, but I break the firearms down and put the smaller pieces in my safe. So for my Mosin Nagant the rifle itself is tucked away in a corner of my closet behind my dresser and the bolt has been removed and put into my personal small safe. My revolver sits in my dresser in a locked pistol case and the cylinder has been removed and put in my personal safe. I have enough free locks to secure all the firearms I'll purchase in my life...

well it's good to know wal-mart's return policy is so friendly with gun locks. i thought that'd be one thing they wouldn't let you return. that's most likely the route i'm going. i'll save the gun safe for the new house so i dont have to move things as much. thanks all.

You can also get a CA DOJ compliant gun cabinet, the ones made by Stack-On aren't very expensive, $200 for a 12 rifle cabinet, that will save you on this silly gun lock business until you can spend some dough on a real safe, that's what I did for the time being. I'm not overly concerned, they are bolted to the wall, in a closet with a biometric lock, within a room that has motion detectors and it's own security zone, fire is the only thing I worry about, but got a smoke detector too in there linked to the security system.

I've got the Sentry G5241 (from Home Depot)...I think it's priced around $300 or so...can't remember. It may not be the strongest safe out there, but it works for me, for now...it's getting a bit crowded, though. I'll probably have to buy a larger (and stronger) one before I buy anymore long guns.

I'll probably end up keeping this one, build some shelves for it, and use it for storing ammo, important paperwork, valuables, etc.

Your wife doesn't want you to spend money on a safe? I had the opposite problem - my wife didn't want me to purchase anymore guns without having a safe in the house...at the time, all I had was a Remington 700 30-06 and a 12ga 870.

If you want a smaller safe, look at the Sentrys at Home Depot, Harbor Freight, etc. BUT, remember that once you start storing your firearms in a safe, they tend to multiple at an exponential rate! I suggest always buying a safe that is at least three times larger than you think you will ever need. That should give you a year or two before you need another one.
