    Special Grade M1 Garand

i took my service grade M1 to shoot recently and it is hard hitting and accurate monster. my best 5 shot groups at 100yard was 2 3/4". I didn't think it was that bad. however, I know i've shot 1.5-2" groups easily using club rifles in the past. then i did a better inspection of the barrel and there are several pits insde the front portion of the muzzle. i don't know how much that affects the rifling, but i don't want to admit my shot is off

anyway, i was thinking about picking up CMP's special grade rifle. i know the parts are reparkerized and it comes in a new stock, but i wanted to know if it is actually rebarreled as well.

i think it's a bargain either way, but i'll probably end up sending my order today for it if i can verify that it is a new krieger barrel, which i could then sell my service grade to one of you folks locally

The CMP has a website: http://www.odcmp.com, and the rifle sales link redirects to http://www.thecmp.org.

On the product page it has this description:

    M1 Garand, Springfield Special
Due to heavy demand ,please allow 180 days for delivery.
M1 Garand Springfield Armory receiver. New production stock and handguard set with CMP cartouche, a new production barrel and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. See photos below for more detail.
Is it a Krieger? Not for that price. It's most likely a Criterion or Douglas. Call them to confirm.

Yes Special grades are rebarreled with new barrels.

But why don't you put that old warhorse to good use? Rebarrel the rifle that you have. You don't have to throw away that old barrel, keep it for show and tell and don't worry about burning out that new barrel.

Look into installing some NM sights, bedding the stock, getting a trigger job done, and handloading some good ammo with match bullets if you really want to see that M1 shine.

You can always send your rifle off to Krieger and have them install a new barrel for you:

Full line of custom, made-to-order barrels in rare and popular configurations. Krieger Barrels manufactures custom, single-point cut-rifled barrels for bolt action, AR-15, AR-10, M1 Garand, M14, M1903 along with a variety of services.

thanks for the info fellas, i think it would be a better buy to just to buy the special grade M1. i verified w/ their armory and they verified that the barrel is indeed a criterion.

what was the twist to the rifles for standard general issue? 1/10, 1/11, 1/12. And how much would it matter in terms of ammo gr used?

Why not get a special and keep your service grade? That way you'll have one with some history and a mint condition shooter. It would be a shame to put a new barrel on the service, since it is still serviceable by far. At the most, you might consider getting the service re-crowned.

Before doing anything expensive, see if you can tune up your current rifle. Sometimes it's just a matter of a little file and sandpaper work on the stock, handguards, and ferrules.

                Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

A 2 3/4" grouping with a service grade M1 and a new M1 shooter ain't half bad. You have a good rifle. These aren't MOA rifles without major work. What ammunition were you shooting? M1 match ammo can cut groups in half. Fixing cylinder wobble can squeeze groups, too. Replace the op rod spring with a new Orion. Check the stock for fore-aft play and lockup. Do the tilt test. If it passes, you have a rifle that can do just about all an M1 can.
