Anyone tried the 7.62x54R Short Range Ammo

I needed to get my shopping cart at Century above $500 for free shipping, and I didn't want to buy more than 3000 rounds of light ball 7.62x54R, so I grabbed some of this, too: http://www.centuryarms.biz/proddetail.asp?prod=AM1295

anyone tried it? I checked out http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm
which is a great resource, and I found this:
http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo013.htm but I'm looking for some first hand info. Thanks.

Nope, haven't tried it. I know about as much about it as you do, but if you're in the Bay Area, I'd be willing to buy a few off you and give 'em a shot.

Sounds good. I'll be taking some up to Chabot a few times per month starting in late February. We'll work something out then, or you can just look around for the guy shooting the M38 that sounds like a .223

I've shot some before. Not only will it sound like a .223, it'll have about that much recoil. Didn't really care about the accuracy, was more curious in seeing what it was like. Interesting, I guess.

I have used up a case of the hollow core practice ammo thru my M44. It spits the same fireball as the Czech silvertip, and is just as loud. Accuracy is comparable with other surplus at 100 yards. I've tried it at the 200 yd range at Chabot but the accuracy potential is inconclusive since I found the ATI stock I put onto the carbine needed shimming halfway into the shooting session.

Yeah, Caseless got it right. In a M44, the fireball is glorious and does well at 100 yards.

If you want a light load for 7.62x54R, try:

              14.0gr Alliant 2400 + 170gr lead cast bullet

Use your basic large rifle primer. This load will push right at 1400fps. I shoot this load in my Finn M39. It's like shooting a loud .22LR rifle. Makes a deep poof, but with no kick. I gas checked the bullets, but mainly to keep leading down.

For short range shooting and when you don't want rounds skipping away for safety they are great. It looks and sounds like normal ammo. Recoil 25% of regular 7.62x54, personally I couldn't have enough of it, I have one case.

I've got some reduced range ammo (East German) that was designed for use in MGs for shorter distance firing on MG ranges. It uses an M43 type projectile that doesn't carry as far as the standard 7.62x54 bullet. The package of boxed ammo came with a range card that indicated the correct sight settings on MGs for this stuff. I haven't seen any more for sale since I bought this ammo. The lighter bullet gives reduced recoil and it is still accurate at 100 yds. The cases and bullet are a pewter color, I imagine to distinguish them from regular ball rounds. Anyone else have any experience with this ammo?

HEY GUIMUS, have you ordered the ammo yet? If not, can I go in on the order with you? I need a few thousand rounds of light 7.62x54 ammo. Am in the bay area also.

I accidently ordered some a while ago when looking for some non-magnetic. The jacket is still magnetic, but the bullet is hollow, no steel core to deal with. I decided to keep it and try it out. It was much easier on the shoulder and a nice break after 100 rounds of heavy regular 7.62. Very good if you want to go to the range and pop off a couple of dozen. I can't comment on accuracy, since the day I went to the range it was very windy and the targets kept getting blown away. I will say that I was hitting the same torso-sized dirt mound consistently at the end of the range at Burro Canyon.

I would recommend buying a box or two but no more. Reason being, I want there to be some left over for me.

                        Non-magnetic surplus x54R? Good luck. Most of it's steel-jacketed.

The site that guimus sited checks for magnetic or not in their reviews.

Yugoslav 7.62x54R is copper jacketed non magnetic. Same with the 8mm and 7.62x39. Guess Yugoslavia had a lot more copper mines than steel plants.

I shot some of that ammo out of an svt 40 last week. It makes lots of neat-o fireworks on the steel targets at night

About two years ago, I ran a few rounds over my chrony and they ran over 3400 fps out of my M44.
