I've been thinking of having a gunsmith spot weld the hinge point on the magazine of my 49/56 so I can deregister it. That way no heat is applied to the receiver compared to if the magazine was welded to it.

I think that would be the best solution. The desire to own one of these is not to have a poormans M1A, but to have a french collectable rifle like any C&R we buy. Fix the mag, loose the grenade ring, and top load with stripper clips like we do with most C&R rifles.

I don't think welding a ten dollar mag is going to affect the value. My goal would be to maintain the look of the rifle and shoot it occasionally. Just one of the games you have to play in CA.

Any modification to a C & R rifle is going to have a negative impact on its value as a collector's piece, as well as aesthetically speaking, unless that modification is easily reversable.

I myself don't like buying collectable guns and then having my way with them to make them California legal.

It would be easily reversable by cutting the latch on the magazine. That's why I suggest welding the hinge point on the magazine. No modification to the gun itself.

So you have the rifle you want. You complied with the rules and it's yours just the way it should be and you want to do things to it to ur-egister it what ever that is. Why? Just asking don't take the question wrong it's not a flame.
