took the plunge and bought one $99 mosin on big5. trying to put a decent scope, i know this topic is beat up but maybe theres a new input out there. thank you, how are the ebay scopes holding up? is it possible to get a decent scope for less than $100?

There are 3 basic ways of mounting a scope to that rifle.
The easiest is a "scout" setup, using a long eye relief pistol scope. The base mounts in place of the rear sight, and requires no modifications to the rifle.
There are a couple places selling this setup for under $100.

There is a variation of this using a cantilever back over the action, but a bent bolt handle is needed:
The other options both require a bent bolt handle, and drilling and tapping the receiver.
You can mount it the way the Soviets did for their sniper rifles:
Or you can drill and tap the top of the receiver and mount it like you would find on a sporting rifle (Rem 700, Win 70, etc).
