    Local Luger expert for appraisal?

I have a pair of German Lugers that I?m interested in selling, but I?d like to get an informed opinion on their value. Can anyone here recommend a local expert? I?m not interested in shipping to someone who will have to send them back to me via a CA FFL, so someone local that I can take them to in person would be ideal.

    Thanks!

Don't know any Luger experts still living, but if you dont TRANSFER OWNERSHIP of a gun, you can ship to and receive same in return from an FFL for service. Assuming the appraiser has a license. For hand guns non licensees can use UPS or Fedex, licensees can also use US Mail. Through their POLICIES (not LAW), UPS and Fedex will jerk you through a financial knothole that will leave you limping. If you want to insure it, you'll need to tell them whats in it and then you are in for a ride. Cheapest way is to have an FFL mail them for you with a ps1508 form and the appraiser can return them by any of the three. The FFL only need to provide you with the form and you can take them to the post office yourself. PM me and I can provide a pdf of ps1508.
Never used them, but there is a company called Ship My Gun that might be useful.
Sorry to slightly jack your thread, got carried away!

Well since you don't have your location listed, and you didn't say in your post where you are located no one knows where "local" is to you...

Thank you for pointing out this glaring omission on my part. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. At least the two previous posters managed to see past this mistake and still offer some useful information.

For the record, I?m in the SF Bay Area, but a knowledgeable authority anywhere in the state would be helpful.

Thanks for the info! No worries on the alleged high jacking, that’s useful info. I found the form on the USPS website.

I?m out of town for a couple days, but will post photos here and over at lugerforums.com as soon as I get back.

I don?t know if he?s still in business, but Mike Krause is an awknowledged Luger expert.

Mike is retired in northern Nevada. Mike stopped attending the Reno show about 3 years ago due to health issues. Shop in SM is no longer open.

FWIW, with a Reno show coming up in a few weeks and being in SF, my inclination would be to go to the show and ask a few of the vendors. I would have tattooed on my forehead "NOT FOR SALE" to dissuade any lowballers who might interpret an inquiry for value as an inclination to sell.

If the show doesn't produce results Willey Bros off South Virginia would be worth a visit.

If you are ever up in the Sacramento area you can try J&G Gunsmithing in Granite Bay or River City Gun Exchange. I'd call ahead and see what they say first. You don't want to waste your time.

River City sells a lot of used guns. They should at least give you a general idea what it's worth and if not, they could probably give you some good advice. I've always thought River City's used gun prices were a little overpriced but still "reasonable" compared to most places where the prices are just totally out of touch with reality.
