Which CMP store is the "best"?

i've always wanted to go to a CMP store location to hand pick a few rifes...
i just checked prices from Las Vegas to Cleveland, OH and you can get a round trip ticket for under $80. which is a great deal in my book. but it begs the question, which store has the biggest selection of guns and rifles in stock? If i'm going to go then i want to go to the one with the best selection.

also, if you purchase in-store, can you still pay to have the guns shipped to your home? or do you have to take the guns with you? i seem to recall that there is a maximum of 5 guns or rifles. or 5 guns and 5 rifles, or any combination equaling "5"?

    Thanks in advance!

The CMP South Store is the biggest, and the Talladega Marksmanship Park is pretty close by. Both would be great for a visit. They will ship the rifles for you no problem. Just make sure you have all your purchasing requirements lined up, it isn't hard, but they do need very specific things and it isn't the same as buying any purchase.

The current limit on Garands is six, and I believe the daily limit at the store is two. It may be one. And it may be zero as they are getting somewhat close to the bottom of the barrel, so don't wait until next year.

Go to the South store. I went to the North store a year ago and it had a lot of junk. Stuff that was super corroded and beat to heck. Not even rack grade.

Ony thing kind of cool about the North store is it's on a base you can drive right on up to the shooting range and watch soldiers shoot machine guns. But that has nothing to do with the store. You'll be greatly dissappointed if you go to the North expecting to find anything you would actually want.

The North store draws from the same inventory as the South. And yep, the quality of the rifles is a far cry from what was there even five years ago. The Philippine rifles are rusty and rough mixmasters.

The limit is six a year and I think the stores have a two rifle daily limit.

Make sure you read their website, you really want to know the rules before you go.

So... the Service-Grade rifles i bought in 2006 are not the same quality as the sevice grade rated rifles of today? i guess i might have to look at auction houses to get something acceptable? i'm actually looking for correct grade or collector's grade equivalent.

i guess there is always Tony Giacobbe, AKA The Garand Guy, if he is still around. a was going to buy a Collector's Grade WRA with matching serial #'s where applicable, and everything else correct, for about $2400 but it got sold out from under me. i rather get 1 of those than 2 of what it seems like the CMP is selling now days. I know that Scott Duff no longer sells rifles on consignment on his sight. I don't know why he stopped. 15 years ago he would be tasked to sell lots of collectible m1's from notable collector's giant collections. but i haven't seen any rifles sales in at least 10 years....

The quality of rifles today is much worse. You will find rust, pitting, and unusable barrels on a rack grade. Service and Field grades will usually be pitted and have new CMP stocks.

You will not find a collector or correct grade aside from the auction. For a real correct or collector CMP papered rifle, be prepared to bring $2500-3000 for a post war, and closer to $4000 for a WWII rifle.
