This is a little project I have been working on for some time now, mostly when the weather is too poor or cold to work outside. Since I live just a few miles from the Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing Civil War battlefield, I have been wanting to do some sort of display for my house.
The wooden board is old Mahogany(?) table top that was left by the previous owner in a pile of scrap. I cut the corners using a hole saw and routered the edges to give it a bit of character, then stained it with some brown/black stain I made up using RIT dye and painted the edges with gold pinstriping paint. A couple of coats of Polyurethane later I called it as done as I was ever going to get it.
The sword is a US Model 1860 Calvary Saber made in 1864 by Mansfield and Lamb, a subcontractor for swords during the conflict and the rifle is a Model 1861 made in 1862 at Springfield Armory. The bayonet came with the rifle when I bought it and shows the same level of patina as the rifle.
