I picked up some Silver Bear 8mm from AIM last month, non-magnetic.

I do not have a M48 but my M24/47 is a really nice rifle. My old eyes have trouble with the sights but it's more accurate then I am... You are a lucky guy to have both....

I've never seen non-magnetic Silver Bear ammo or Silver Bear ammo in 8mm Mauser. Are you sure you didn't get the Prvi Partizan 8mm from AIM?

Personally, I feel the M48 is a much better firearm. The bent bolt handle adds greatly to the comfort and handling.

You are correct, it's Prvi Partizan..

The Silver Bear was for my Mosin.. 7.62X54R 203 gr SP... I do not see it listed right now...

          Thanks for the correction...

just shot my brothers m48 the other weekend, it was a dream and pretty darn accurate for having messed up crooked looking sights

Aint played with a 24/47 but have owned 3 or 4 M-48s and really liked them, the 24/47s dont look bad either

ok fellow mauser addicts I have returned too base and have following report. ammo used 1961 german steel cased 7.92mm. first rifle up m24/47, target white rock 6` wide at base at 300 yrs approx. sight set at lowest level hits obtained pretty consistently. m48 same results. brown boulder at 900 meters, wind condtions increasing between 10 to 15 mph. 1st up m24/47, worked my sight up from 600 to 900 meters before rounds stated to drop onto target. last shot hit top of boulder. but that was my last shot as the case became stuck in chamber. no cleaning rod with me to knock out stuck case. note to myself add rod to field kit! switched over to m48 same procedure regarding sight setting, final sight setting at 900 meters. unable too hit boulder. groupings were wider. looks like I need a spotter at this range! overall between the 2 rifles the m24/47 action was smoother, rifle balanced better and was more accurate. also the buttplate on the m48 was more slippery, which was likely causing most of my accuracy problems. the m48 bolt gives you more leverage to open the action with sticky cases. wind finally blew me out of there at 7pm as the wind was gusting about 15 to 20 mph.

I've own both, I like the 24/47's stock shape better, not as clubby as the 48. Being left handed I also like the straight handle on the 24/47, easier to get started than the turned down bolt on the 48. Lastly the sling mounting on the right side of the 48 gets in my way so the conventional mounting on the 24/47 is better for leftys. All that said both are excellent rifles. My 48 rebarreled to 7.62 NATO is very accurate.

Im more of a G 33/40, I have one and I had to jump though hoops of fire to get it, cost me about $800, but it was defiantly worth it. Im not a huge M48 fan, it looks to chubby, and its hard to get used to after shooting K98s and my G 33/40 for so long, but thats just me

For some reason my M48 keep giving me hard time to operate the bolt (especially when I'm cocking), is this normal?

not usually, but also tends to depend on the type and quality of ammo. steel case ammo is going to make the bolt harder to open. brass case is easier to open bolt after firing. make sure your chamber is clean and disassemble your bolt and clean it.

I'm pretty sure I cleaned it very well, completely stripped the bolt, cleaned and applied Remoil. It doesn't matter what ammo I'm shooting with, Remington, Yugo surplus, Romanian surplus (steel case) all gave me hard time to open. It is still possible to shoot, but not as easy as some people can with fingers on youtube videos.

I pulled out both rifles (m24/47 & M48) I compared smoothness of actions. M48 is harder to open and moving bolt back and forth rougher. alot rougher. I would probably say your`e M48 is normal. as this is typical of m48 I have examined. If you want a smoother action and easier bolt opening your going to need a M24/47 model. wait till big 5 runs another sale on it. find one that has nice wood, good blueing and a mint bore. also check the action for smoothnness. these are signs of this model being put into storage after rebuild.

haha thanks for the clarification, I'm actually saving money for a rock island 1911, so probably won't get a second long gun. My m48 shoots fine overall other than the bolt problem.
