Remingtom Model 31 on consignment rack - help me resist!!

I've been in the local gun store twice in the last three weeks, and have handled this shotgun. It is well worn but fully functional, and choked "full". So far I've resisted because I just don't need another shotgun..... but the hang tag says $150, and I'm pretty sure they would accept an offer of $100. If I got it, I'd probably bob the barrel to about 19" or so and made a HD gun out of it.

    Please help.

Model 12 clone. Great shotgun. Be a shame to bastardize by cutting barrel.

getting a functional 31 for $100 sounds great.

the idea of cutting the barrel turns my stomach.

Buy it, leave the barrel as-is, enjoy it.

Could get it for a hundred and sell it to me for 110 and make an easy profit.

The last Rem 31 I bought was a 20 ga 28' FC, for $125. A bit worn in all expected places but a damn good shotty.

                But that was in 1982.

Here is my take on it:

They are not a particularly valuable gun. As such, cutting the barrel is not going to ruin the value by a very large percentage. The question becomes, is the loss in value going to be balanced by the increased utility?

A Full choke shotgun is only going to be useful in limited hunting situations and unless that is the type of bird hunting you are intending to do, it is basically going to be nothing more than a safe queen and a curiosity. There is nothing wrong with that, I have a vault full of guns that fit into that category and will no doubt get more before I am done.

Even guns that are deemed to have more intrinsic value like Model 12 Winchesters are not all that valuable in their long-barreled full choke versions. A couple of years ago I bought a 1917 vintage Model 12 in a nice leg-o-mutton case for $200. I bought another barrel for it and made it into a faux trench gun and am far happier with it.

If the barrel is cut back to 18" or thereabouts, it is basically only going to be useful as a home defense gun, which also gives it narrow utility. If that is the type of shotgun you are interested in, you can get a new Maverick 88 for about the same money as what the old Remington is going to cost and won't have to feel bad about cutting it up.

So.....my take on it is that if you are looking at getting as a curiosity, is it worth a couple hundred dollars to you? If it is then by all means jump on it, if not then let it go to someone else.

BTW, I can't help it, but I hate the term "shotty", it reeks of trying to be hip or maybe just being too lazy to spell out "shotgun".

                    I appreciate the thoughtful reply.

My intention was to buy it, pull it apart, tinker with it, and see how it works. Maybe clean it up and take it out once or twice. I like to disassemble firearms to see how they operate - it's a sickness, but it keeps me out of the bars and whorehouses . Honestly, I don't need another HD shotgun or any shotgun that is choked "Full". And I don't really need another shotgun in general, so I'm going to leave it there on the rack and let someone else nab it.

Now, before anyone sends me a PM asking where it is at, I will tell you it is in a local gun store in Idaho.

And I agree with you - "Shotty" looks stupid in print, and sounds retarded when spoken. And it is only one letter short of "shotgun" so laziness has nothing to do with it.

Also - while we're ranting, "Winny" when talking about Winchesters.

Don?t resist. If you like it buy it no matter what popularity a specific gun is looked upon at the time. Some of my best firearms were purchased before anyone else saw value in them , then 10 to 15 years later 1k for a handgun I paid $250 for or $5,000 for something I bought for $800.
Some guns are always going to stay level and that?s okay . If your having fun and interested in a specific firearm that?s all that matters .
Learning the mechanics of a certain gun is great , giving you a ever expansive set of knowledge for firearms in general . I personally like when you think a gun can be totally different from another but when they are disassembled you find similar styles of function ,it’s rewarding for your thoughts to come full circle.

I use Smith a lot when talking about Smith and Wesson firearms , hope that?s not too hipster or annoying.

shotty is stupid, winny is stupid, cali is really stupid.

                        Smith is fine.

re this model 31- for $100 i would buy it even though I don't need another long barrel full choke gun. 100 bucks is chumpchange anymore. it costs $150 to fill my truck with gas.

and you never know. take it out and pattern it. it may give you something other than full that you could find a use for.

BTW, I can't help it, but I hate the term "shotty", it reeks of trying to be hip or maybe just being too lazy to spell out "shotgun".
At 74 yrs old, I'm far past caring what "hip" is. Other than wishing that mine didn't ache so much. Or that I hadn't just yesterday, got my wife outa the hospital because she broke hers a month ago.

Feel free to comment about me being too lazy to spell out, "out of".

If per chance you want to compile, and post, a complete list of all the words used on CalGuns, that you personally hate. Because you don't consider them proper descriptive vernacular, suitable for publication here.

We can take a poll, and ask "WHO CARES WHAT YOU HATE?".

My vote will assuredly be "NOT I".

BTW, ...... I know that a period. Correctly goes "inside the quotation" mark, at the end of a sentence. Because back in 1962, my seventh grade English Teacher, Mrs. Wald , sternly told me so.

But I am not 12 anymore. And I no longer GAC about what others think, about the way I talk, or write.

Sure; I already bolded all the wrong ways I posted. Bolding just doesn't show up very well. Because I only bolded the quote mark/period.

                              as I wrote it.

^^^ CORRECT ^^^ ........ Even tho it looks odd, because the majority of folks punctuate a quote at the end of a sentence incorrectly.

Such a small thing. But really upsets anal retentive OCD proper English punctuation advocates.
