    SKS Bolt

    Hello,

I did a field strip of my SKS, and found that a little bit of the firing pin was protruding out of the bolt. Is this normal? I was reading on the internet, that if you shake an SKS bolt you can hear the firing pin rattle, due to the free-floating design. I tried shaking mine, and it did not rattle, nor move. It was still in the forward position. Could it be that the bolt was modified to have a spring loaded firing pin? Any input would be appreciated.

BTW:The gun is free of cosmoline, so I doubt that is the problem.

You need to disassemble the bolt and take out the firing pin. It is either stuck with dried cosmoline or bent. Most likely cosmoline though. I soaked all of my SKS bolts hard core solvent for a couple of days and still had to take out the firing pins and scrub them down with steel wool in order to get the dried cosmoline off of them.

The spring loaded firing pin modification holds the firing pin in the other direction.

if the firing pin is spring loaded, it should not be in battery (Forward position).

you need to follow the advise above

You might have to wack the firing pin retaining pin pretty hard to get it out. I had to go and get a bigger hammer. A piece of scrap wood with a big hole drilled in it helps too. Here are the bolt disassembly instructions if you don't already have them...

you could boil the whole bolt for 3-4 minutes, that worked for me.

Go with the Murrays mod, it's well worth the money.

My guess is it's either cosmoline, grease, or rust which is preventing the firing pin from free-floating.

Lots of good advice above. Taking it out and giving a good clean is a must. Also one other possible cause for the firing pin getting stuck is pierced primers causing fouling from the blast to get into the channel. I've seen a number of SKS guns that have been piercing prmers with the Wolf/Barnaul russian made ammo. My Yugo was doing it and even with a completely clean firing pin channel it would cause the pin to get stuck from the blast. Once I put a very light countersink around the firing pin hole to remove the very sharp edge at the hole the problem went away. Murray from Murray's gunsmithing came up with the fix. But this is just a possibility. If you don't see any pierced primers than you'll just need to give it a good cleaning and you'll be fine.

Yeah I had a major problem with pierced primers until I sent my bolt to Murray for this mod. Now it works GREAT.
