    CMP 1917s. 1/9/2024

Beginning January 9, 2024, CMP will have a very limited quantity of 1917 Service and Field Grade rifles available for mail orders. CMP Stores will also have a limited quantity this week as well. These are sold AS-IS with no returns or exchanges. Once these are sold out, we will not backorder these.

The M1917 Enfield was developed and manufactured during the period of 1917-1918. These rifles come in a variety of grade conditions.

Is it just me, or is $1000, and $1,100 a little steep? Right around the same price as the 1911s. Much rather have a USGI 1911 for that price.

You actually have to work to get one as well. Nobody said it was gonna be easy.

Shot at ceremonies, using blanks and not maintained well. The bores are gonna be roached.

        No, thanks.

I thought the price was a little high as well. I couldn't get a buyer for either of my very nice 1917s last year at a grand.

            And they still want $1,000?!

CMP has seemed to have changed their mission since the 1911s became available. It used to be about putting surplus guns in the hands of civilians for the purpose of advancing marksmanship. Now it seems to be only about insuring the organization's future and paying for expensive new shooting facilities.

The street price of M1917's is around the same $1000-$1200 area once you factor in shipping and/or tax. If the bores were good, it would be a fair, but not great price.

If the one you get still has the original barrel, but it has a bad bore, it's now basically a wall hanger unless you replace the barrel. I bet it costs a few bucks to have a new barrel screwed on, probably about half the cost of the rifle factoring in the cost of the barrel and shipping it all back and forth if you can't get it done locally.

I recently got a pretty decent Remington M1917 here locally for $1000 OTD, which I feel was a fair, but not killer price.

My guess is that they will sell out.

Probably. At least these have not been in private hands where Bubba can "improve" them. But who knows what "maintenance" occurred or didn't occur at the American Legion Posts.

I thought and still think CMP's 1911 and M1 Garand prices are reasonable. Not killer, but reasonable.

I've handled a few VFW/American Legion rifles. Shot at ceremonies with (apparently) BP blanks, not really cleaned afterwards. They are a mess inside.

The 1911's I have no opinion on, but I think the Garands are a pretty square deal assuming you get a good one. The Rack Grades are a roll of the dice, but usually still decent. All four of the ones I bought in the past had an issue somewhere, mostly with the wood.

I'm sure they'll sell out and considering CMP's typical history of generally sending out better-than-described firearms, I'm sure they'll be good enough. I just don't need another 1917. I do, however, want more Garands and 1911s for some reason. Humans are irrational.

I am also gonna pass on this one after participating in the carbine, 1911 and garand sales. I just don't see the 1917 as something I need to own, though I jumped at the chance to buy another CMP 1911 this year.
